Back surgery, Shoulder surgery - what are you guys doing to yourselves? As it is I won't be going which is unfortunate seeing it is only 100k's down the road. If there is a central breakfast spot please let me know and I will drive up and say hello. I finally have the slab poured for a workshop and with any luck the shed will arrive and be installed in the next month or so. Then the engine to comes out for a third and hopefully last time. Been waiting a few years for this so its a bit exciting. To put this in context, Tradies are reasonably cheap out here, but near on impossible to get onsite.... The slab was quoted 7 months ago. Andy, We're staying at the Edgewater Caravan Park. Not sure of the timing of the daily departures, but given each day is 200km plus, we may be leaving relatively early. Not sure how many are staying there, but it was the one recommended by the organisers.
My back issues go back to when I was driving buses and trucks, and not doing any real exercise. Just disc compression and nerve damage. Still surf and ride motorcycles and sail, so it's not too bad yet.

Edgewater Caravan Park - just down the road from the Rivermark cafe which does a good coffee. No doubt you will get more details as the date draws closer, but would be surprised if you headed off before 9. I am sure I will figure something out.
Let me guess, you drove trucks and buses before ergonomic seats and auto shift boxes?

Let me guess, you drove trucks and buses before ergonomic seats and auto shift boxes? Yes, I drove small parcel trucks. 1969 Datsun Homer, then a late 70's Dyna, both pan-techs, both column shifts. Then NSW govt buses. Leyland Leopards, Tigers and the first Mercedes. Funnily, in my spare time then I used to drive a friend's Albion Double Decker, crash box, no power steering or brakes.... No 2023. It's still at the HCVA museum. On tight corners, you had to put your left foot up on the dash to get better leverage . The only vehicle in that list that had any type of ergonomics was the Mercedes. It had an auto box, exhaust brakes and a Bostrom seat. All the others had minimal comforts. The rest of the bad back problems was caused by sitting on motorcycles, or in office chairs...

Just registered for this event - coming up from Melbourne with Natasha (my Ural) and my wife Hanh. Is everyone staying at the Edgewater - the meeting place for our adventure?

Hope you all have a safe and awesome ride. Welcome to my backyard, unfortunately I won't be there and I won't even be home. Although I did see someone just ride past the front of my place, 3pm, on their way from Wingham up the hill to Comboyne then no doubt on through Kew. Didn't get a good lock but might have been a burnt orange full front screen?
Anyway hope to see plenty of picks and a route map if someone remembers.

We had a fantastic ride. 35 outfits all up. Some very new, and shiny. Some quite a lot older, but still going well. Day one was up around the Comboyne area, Upper Comboyne look out etc. Some of the roads were quite choppy, and loads of dust. Finishing up going through Kew, back to Port via Laurieton and the coast road. A shortish thunderstorm and some small hail. Day Two split the group with 11 2WD bikes going up the Maria River Rd, then a sand track for a bit before a rest at Crescent Head park. Morning tea at Gladstone. Lunch at a great lookout, the name escapes me, but it looked SE to South West Rocks. The sand road was plenty of fun, even though there were a few that needed a push and a certain orange bike lost a muffler that behaved like a sand anchor.... Still pretty good considering they were three up. Day three was shorter for us, but went South West towards Ellenborough and finished on the beach at Diamond Head. Where we left the group to make our way back to load the trailer.
Gabi had never done any kind of off roading in either side cars, or motorcycles and apart from the really rough tracks and juddering stock suspension, she said she'd do it again. Which is a big plus.
The dinners at the Sports Club and the Settlers Inn were pretty good, even if the Sports club kitchen struggled with the influx of 60+ Sidecar jockeys.
Suffered two blowouts on the trailer on the way home, due to old tyres (a risk I was prepared to take, as they'd been to Scone the week before). This required Gabi driving the van, me riding the Ural and the NRMA taking the disabled trailer on a flat bed. During the weekend the Ural also started being difficult to turn in to corners, so when I got home, jacked it up to find the steering bearings very tight in both directions. On removal, they were quite dry, and in my opinion were set up too tight from the factory. 17,000km over 15 months since new. New Bearings on the way, and should be back on the road by tomorrow.
If you haven't done the Ural Adventure Ride, it's really worth doing. You can learn a hell of a lot from other people's mistakes, and their successes. It's good to have so many people, and bikes to get great ideas for improvements in both riding skills and adjustments to your machine.
Big thanks to Glenn, Greg, Jon for the mapping and to Clare and Mat at Ural for sponsoring and supporting the ride.
