What's with the cars and caravans at rallys these days? That white one has non-standard shocks; Ikon? Do you know who owns that one? The white Ural belongs to Stephen Davis from Finley. I can give you his contact details if you want. I know you fantasise about putting new shocks on your bike, but I don't see any real shortcomings with the standard Sachs. What is it about the Sachs that you don't like? So you have an email for Stephen? He has knowledge I need... The Sachs keep the bike from sitting on the wheels, that's about all. They are harsh in general and useless in dealing with small and repetitive bumps. I expect it's a lot of stiction preventing the shock from responding quickly. The spring rate on the sidecar is way too high as well. I've never had a bike that didn't respond well to suspension upgrades and I suspect the potential for the Ural is huge. What happened to you and Speedboat???

What happened to you and Speedboat??? It's a Ural; it is what it is. I find the standard shocks more than adequate. At all speeds on all surfaces. Other brands of shocks may be better, but I'd much rather spend the cost of new shocks on tyres, fuel and general running costs. Speedboat, with nearly 130,000km still handles good enough to keep up most other Urals, and I find it comfortable and easy to ride. Speedboat had a gearbox/clutch problem when nearly home from VARSTy; seems to be a gearbox issue as bits of metal came out with the oil. The box is now out of the bike, but I still haven't opened it. I had a couple of insect bikes at Mannahill a fortnight ago. A bite on my inner elbow resulted in my left arm swelling from the armpit to a couple of inches from the wrist. It seemed OK after a few days, but last Sunday, a week after the bite, a secondary infection became quite annoying. It's nearly back to normal.
