Hi all, A first post from me. Probably many more to come as our 2018 Ranger approaches 5000k Has anyone improved the headlight performance. Yes we ride it in the dark and it could be much better. Not only brighter but high beam spread is poor. The headlight insert (branded JUTE) is Chinese from what I can find with a no name H4 halogen bulb. Options I can think of in increasing order of cost are. Better Halogen bulb in a Hella insert. LED bulb in above but vibrations might be a problem LED insert but @#^% expensive. Anybody with ideas greatly appreciated. Off to update my profile. Looks a bit bare. OLDMATE

I tried a couple of el-cheapo LED globes with no lasting success. I gave up on them - vibration killed them both so I upgraded to a German made Osram H4 55W/60W quartz halogen globe and found it a bit better than the original, at least it's hanging in there and throwing light further down the road. I think the problem is the std. Russian headlight. Maybe the globe isn't located in the ideal focus position or maybe the glass lens diffuser pattern is suss OR maybe it's me getting older and needing more light at night maybe all of the above I really don't know. What did make a huge difference to me was fitting a 9" LED light bar to the sidecar bumper and wiring it into the high beam circuit so it comes on with the high beam. I've thought of chasing up a British or European made insert but haven't gone there yet because light bar is filling the need for the moment and I don't do much night riding these days anyway. Good luck with your quest, I think your 1st option might the quickest, cheapest thing to try first. it will be interesting to know how you go. Bruce

Cheap LED globes look really white but have no distance throw. You need to spend good money for good led. Good led also has large heat sink and fan that will be hard to fit in the Ural shell as the speedo cable gets in the way. You could replace the whole shell with a quality multi LED insert for around $200 and replace the toy lights on the sidecar with something better. Dollars fix everything or just stay indoors at night like me.....
Just looked on Ebay.......you can get a pair for around $100 Cree 200watt lee

I put in an all-in-one made by Hella 72104 7" HI/LO/DRL LED Insert 9-33V. I’ll attach some photos if I can. Throws a beautiful light on high and low beam. Fits perfectly too. Except $$$. I think the parabolic mirror design is beyond its usefulness and you’ll have to spend $$ to get a good bulb. The installation was a relative breeze as well.

Thanks for the input John. Do you mean NARVA 72104. Couldn't find a Hella that looks like this. If only high/low/DRL did you use the drl for the Parking lamp or some other way.

Sorry. Once you take out the old reflector unit, one connector matches straight up - the high and low beam. I took the wire that fed the parking bulb in the old unit and wired it up to the DRL, which is the horizontal bar in the new unit, so it comes on whenever that previous bulb would come on. I put a thread on Soviet Steeds about it - www.sovietsteeds.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=54186John

Some photos of the light throw if you're interested. Not great photos though. You can see the headlight cutoff on the trees in the second photo. Not sure why the bright section is there in front of the bike, but I didn't notice it, I must admit. The one against the wall was highbeam. John

This is the correct Narva semi-sealed beam and a good H4 globe to go with it as I fitted to my Ural recently.
- HELLA H4 Headlight Globe Plus 90 12V 60/55W XDU1260/55BL (I used one of these on my Triumph and liked it, whiter light, better distance throw)
- Narva 7" H4 Free Form Halogen Headlamp Conversion (Single) - Part number: 72000
- Narva 12v 5w T-10 Wedge Globe (parking light) Part number: 17177BL
All off Ebay - $130 delivered.
