Well that took some work! Had to wire in a tachometer “converter” to the brown wires to both coils. These go to the yellow and blue wires of the converter box (taped to the headlight mount in the photo), and from there the green wire goes to the yellow/black wire from the speedo. BUT! It all works! It works! It’s finally finished!!!! I’ll do some runs to compare the speedo accuracy but just up and down the driveway it’s picking up 6-8kph quite well. The tachometer seems accurate too with cold idle about 1,000rpm which I think is close to what it should be. Neutral, indicator lights and driving light indicators all work and the fuel tank will always be half full.

Congratulations - every time I look under the speedo housing I promise my self that I will tidy up the birds nest...... and never get around to it. 1050 is the correct idle RPM for EFI models - mine starts around 800-900 and once the O2 sensors kick in it slowly ramps up to about 1000.

Congratulations - every time I look under the speedo housing I promise my self that I will tidy up the birds nest...... and never get around to it. Mine now looks worse but at least for a good reason. The speedo reads 62kph when the gps reads 60 so I’m happy with that too. I might try and make it a touch more accurate my playing around with the wheel circumference but I’ll have to use my brain to work out which way to change it in the speedo. For now I’m a happy lad.

Here’s a video. I don’t have a way of filming while riding.

Hi there. I thought I'd jot down the final wiring connections I made. The first wire colour is that coming from the speedo, then it's usage, and then what I wired it to in the Ural.
From the 9 pin connector: light blue - right signal - red wire from handlebar switch orange - left signal - light blue from handlebar switch blue - high beam - double orange wires from high beam light yellow/black - RPM signal - from taco adapter, with the other wires from the taco adapter going to the brown wires to each coil green - ground - brown blue/white - fuel gauge - to 330 Ohm, 1 Watt resistor then to ground red - unswitched 12V - from position 1 of fuse box black - switched 12V - orange wires that went to backlights of previous gauge
3 pin connector to 3 pin connector of magnetic pickup
6 pin connector red/green - neutral - double red wires from neutral light
Future improvements: 1. hook the fuel light into the fuel gauge wiring so that when the low fuel light should come on, it makes the fuel gauge on the speedo flash 2. install five magnets on the front wheel instead of two.

Settings: Hold the button in when you turn on the ignition 1- wheel circumference: click button to change digit, then wait for next digit to flash. 2- number of magnets on the wheel 3- number of cylinders (2) 4- fuel sensor (I used 3 because that worked with the resistor I added) 5- reset the odometer
When running, pressing the button momentarily changes between trip meter and odometer. Holding the button in, whilst in odometer mode, changes to mph/kph. Holding the button in whilst in trip mode, resets the trip.

F..k me!...what a drama to see how fast your going on a Ural!..nothing wrong with the original!... Just gotta figure out what the differentials are and the jobs right😎

For me it was the needle bouncing around and not being able to be sure of the speed in 40kph zones

Lol Wheels, yours must be the only "original" that doesn't flop around like an epileptic seal having a fit? Mine is pretty good after 50km's but comparing mine to a GPS under 50k's means an instant speeding ticket in school zones. Great mod John! And thanks for a detailed report.

Robs Tourist and my Retro’s Speedo’s are both good so must be lucky. BUT!...one is out 5% and the other 10% By the way! I wasn’t knocking Johns report. I found it interesting and well written and will greatly assist anyone that wishes to upgrade their speedo😎
