Or are you replacing this seal with an O'Ring?
Ok, got it Lee, the shafts are 8mm so an extra one there just adds a bit of extra leak resistance to the rod, cap and existing seals. Thanks

Now you get the idea...! It is an extra. Donβt waste your time with light oils either. Just use 10/30 or 10/40 engine oil. It changes a crappy damper to a great one. ππ

Ural have a seal kit - unfortunately it is only available to Dealers and I didn't ask the price to get it fitted. Given a new one is about $40 on eBay I figured I would just replace the O'Rings and oil. The recess in the end cap fits a 1x8mm metric which has an OD of 10mm - the recess is 10.3 so the Oring isn't pressing on the existing seal. The end piston has a 2.5x15mm metric with an OD of 20mm. Tried mineral oil, 20W60 since it is what I had lying around and didn't like it. It was super hard at half setting. Washed it out and used 45wt Silicon Shock oil - easily sourced at any RC hobby shop in 2oz bottles. A fill takes about 30ml. Fitted and took it on a 400K round trip and am very happy with the result. Take that with a grain of salt... I didn't mind the original crappy damper, I only changed the seals because it had lost some of it's dampning force.

Just to clarify:- Edit by lee......fit an additional small O-ring inside each end cap. It fits perfectly into the cap and helps prevent the weeping past the original o-ring. Just put it on the shaft before fitting the cap.
Small O'Ring Large O'Ring

No pictures deleted, probably on the previous page.. I think we are talking about the same thing Lee - I didn't meant replacing the seal in the cap but putting an extra 1x8mm under it. The recess in the end cap is 10.3 so the 1x8mm fits without an issue and doesn't place stress on the seal of the other cap.

Here's the tool that I used to open my Steering damper, made it very easy. Its a push bike tool that I had for some reason - see here: www.bikehand.com/en/product-401233/Lock-ring-tool-YC-157.htmlI used SAE 10W Fork Oil in my damper, 3-4 clicks now is what full on was before with the original fluid.
