Dave from Gundagai here, having had to give up 2 wheels (old injuries) recently I thought I'd add a 3rd wheel so I can continue riding. Can-Am & trikes do nothing for me and, as I'll be pottering around the scrub here, a Ural seems ideal. Have a choice between an older (carbie) model or a new one so hopefully I can find out the pros & cons of each here (once I've got one I can always delete this un-necessary stuff from my intro), attached photo is about 5 yo, I've just lost more hair & the unable-to-start bike

Welcome. You will find that the type people have, Carbs/EFI, determine which are the best. Just joking. Great people here always willing to help. We have a 2018 Ranger and love it but a bit more electronics to go wrong. Depends how much money you have. The later models are better and are getting better bit by bit over time.

the 10 grand difference is a thing but, being an old time mechanic, carbies have an appeal, also with trundling around here triple discs are a bit of overkill (also nearest dealer is a looong way away in case of warranty), have a couple of weeks to decide anyway

I do all our servicing, it is all still easy. And as to three discs being overkill Well 330kg dry plus co-pilot and all our gear (hers mainly) I have used all of those three discs on a number of occasions. You can never have too much stopping power.

nearest dealer is at Mittagong (3hrs away) but the bloke has invited me up to have a play on a disused air strip so I can nut out backup etc then, playing devil's advocate with myself right now, agree with the stopping power - my big thing here is cows, sheep & 'roos

As Oldmate says, never enough stopping power. I've come from a 1078RR Brutale and after replacing std. Nissin master cylinder (shit!) with a Brembo RCS 19 stopping was phenomenal. As with you Dave physical issues have stopped me riding solo. Long story short, one issue is xxxked hands so any help is a bonus. So yesterday I put the RCS 19 on the Ural out of curiostity. Definitely an improvement. I think with some sintered pads it will be better still, I'm not worried about disc wear.
Came down our local Mt. Stuart last week, 9ks for an elevation of 600m. Wife in the chair and and a xxxking hard ride down. To all you blokes that have drum brakes - RESPECT!!!! Probably spoiled from riding a beast of a bike for years. Haven't had brakes this bad since my '71 Bonnie! Welcome mate.
Cheers

Just remember.......with passenger you are getting close to 1/2 a tonne that you want to stop. 🤣
My bike club motto is “Brakes are for fools and people who worry”

I've owneed one for a week. So glad I bought one. Was going to be a 50th birthday thing but the wife suggested why not enjoy one sooner. Very glad I did! I'm sure you'll love it!
