Mate, I was probably about 15 and we 'rode it like we stole it', which we probably did from someone's Dad. At the time it certainly felt like the fastest thing on wheels which has certainly lead to other things. Pretty pedestrian in reality, probably a step up from a BSA Bantam. Reliable enough though.
Cheers

Left Wentworth on the Silver City hwy heading up the 266km to Broken Hill, sucked fuel at Coombah. Along this stretch the Lakes to left and right showed signs of water with Lake Popitah being the largest and most visible. Made it into Broken Hill mid afternoon and set up camp in the Lakeview CV park, well named coz there’s no view of any Lake . BH has a lot to look at and a trip to the miners memorial showed the slow evolution of OH&S accompanied by a decreasing death rate at work, plenty of historical buildings and a dinner at the Palace Hotel where the sidecar met Priscilla, (plenty of boa feathers and glitter blowing down the street). Next day a trip out to Silverton and the Mad Max museum where a few tourists confused me with part of the exhibition. Well worth a visit and some interesting ruins to the west of the town gave some practice in sandy conditions. The pub at Silverton do a good job but you can sense the staff have some serious “tourist fatigue”. Left BH after visiting the Pro Hart gallery, no arty farty type but I came away with a better understanding of a unique and talented bush artist who was also a miner working down the pit. The Silver City hwy is an excellent road in great condition, heading north I had the road to myself mainly, I guess the road ends at Tibooburra and the dirt starts so not too may nomads venture up this way. The land getting drier and seemed uphill however that could have been the stiff headwind all the way to Fowlers Gap where having topped the Gap the wind came abeam from the west. Stopped for fuel in Packsaddle where I met a guy flying a gyrocopter taking fuel from the bowser. Struck up a conversation and he was very interested in the outfit and I (being an ex aircraft maintenance engineer was very interested in his set-up. He flys with a mob of pig shooters, he finds, musters and drives the pigs into a killing zone where the shooters are concentrated, says it saves time and increases their daily tally. He departed by taxiing to the road then took off along the road into the wind. Rolled into Milparinka and set up camp in the car park near the pub. Dinner in the Milparinka Hotel where I managed to eat the biggest rump steak I’d ever seen ($24). Some local volunteers manned the old police station and were very knowledgable about the history of the old gold mining and Sturt’s attempt to find the inland sea way back in the day. Silly bastard towed a whaling boat all the way to Tibooburra before he gave up. Next day into Tibooburra and set camp at the local CV park, bit dusty but there’s water and power. The Tib Family Hotel is a little gem and well frequented by the locals. Big party for the locals that night and the music stopped at 4am. They love a party out there and I managed to meet a few that had come off the stations for the gig. Early start for a pre dawn run out to Camerons Corner, beautiful sunrise in the desert and not too may roos. As Piper informed me the road out to CC was “good” and their was a fair amount of water in the small lakes, and …….. who thought a desert was green! Pretty good times out there for a while. Made the corner stopped for a coffee and got offered a job behind the bar, tempting, but no. Back to Tib under a big sky and while the road was challenging in parts and corrugated with deep ruts hiding in the sand drifts the ride was a ton of fun. A similar trip back to BH with fuel in Packsaddle (great mixed grill). Headed out to Menindee next day and saw the Lake filling up, I thought it would be a bit more like the Riviera of the outback but they have had no water there for such a long time everything is dry and dusty. Took the track that follows the Darling up to Wilcannia 140kms, 100kms of corrugation plenty of theories about hitting them at the right speed and I agree. The vibration took a toll and the sidecar mudguard developed a crack, stopped drilled this but the crack continued propagating - 100 MPH tape, the best, guard looks like a props shoulder strapped to buggery now. Two nights on the Darling at Wilcannia, the Ural charmed the locals who came around to have their picture taken with it. The Darling is in flood and the track north to Louth and Tilpa are closed so off to Cobar and managed to coincide with the Cobar show and race meet. Trying to figure out a route back to the Illawarra that is less traveled, so Jack and I will set off tomorrow.
