Pre 2014 carby air filter is washable……plastic zip top bag, little bit of petrol….shake, remove and let dry…….super extra minimal oil or none and refit. Anything wet with oil just clogs up fast……..stops the dirt but stops the air as well.
2014 on EFI comes standard with paper filter. Paper is the most efficient until dirty. Washable filters are just a teeny little less efficient but in dusty conditions they prove better overall with frequent cleaning compared to a paper element that you may leave in for the trip duration.
Compressed air on a paper filter is a no-no…….filter paper hit with high pressure becomes cardboard. Tapping a paper element……if dirt falls out…..it is ready for replacement. 🤣
My reversed EFI intake mod was done for fitment of EFI to a carby bike……different tank mounting that got in the way. I have used a Chux cloth over a plastic bottle with lots of drilled holes as a pre-cleaner attached to the intake nozzle when in the desert areas…….works ok. 👍
Carby air filter housing had sealing issues but good when sorted. I have had zero issues with EFI air box sealing.

Cheers Lee, I have a thing about not using throwaway parts if possible. That said I am not looking for one of those old spark plug cleaners you used to see in Servo workshops [when Servos had workshops]. The oil bath air cleaner on the FJ Holden was a hoot.

Ordered my K&N from Rolan looks like a long delivery 2 to 3 weeks. Ordered some cleaner and "red" oil spray as well. Anyone else have views on this stuff?

Anyone else have views on this stuff? Bought some of that to use on the filter of my Kawasaki FR651V. I have two filter covers, one oiled ready to go and one on the engine. Swapped out every 2 hours depending on conditions. What I found with the Red oil was that it needs to be applied and almost rubbed into the foam or it will pool. The cleaner is really good but I am not that fond of the oil. Back to Ural Filters: For what it is worth I check my filter every oil change and tap it out looking for dirt like Lee says, buy the filters from Clare, change them every 10,000k. I did buy a FRAM CA3916 to hold as a spare, but the build quality was no where near the one supplied by Ural, it is in the bike now because of the Xmas break, but it will be coming out next oil change.

Use K&N red oil sparingly!..very sparingly! otherwise you will have a gasping Ural on your hands….that’s from experience!! 😎

Thanks Wheels and Andy. Your opinions valued as always. I bought one, on the basis that it may actually end up being unavailable in Australia, some time in future. It's my spare. Another question. Can it be washed out in petrol??

Can it be washed out in petrol?? Yes it can, and is probably the better way to clean it. A lot of us carry a large ziplock bag to wash the filter in on the run. Have everything ready, put petrol in the bag, in goes the filter, zip up the bag and shake briskly. If you do the job quickly you will be able to wash your filter twice (if it’s real dirty) before the ziplock bag starts to break down from the petrol. Shake out the excess petrol from the filter and let dry naturally, it doesn’t take long. Blowing out any filter with compressed air is not a good policy. K&N filters are an excellent filter and are tough. 😎
