35% Tariff on all goods from Russia or Belarus announced by the Australian government today. That increases the price of my optioned 2022 Gear Up by around AUD$12,000.00
Say goodbye Ural!

Yes, I don't think there is any option but to cancel my order placed in January. It will be at least a year or more before they can get new bikes into the country at a reasonable price. Anything shipping with an origin of Russia won't get into the country without the tariff being applied. They would have to find a neutral country to export the bikes or components to (without tariffs), build them there then re-export to the customers world wide. Such a shame for Ural to have this happen to their business.

I have an invoice (not a motor vehicle contract) only at the RRP from the local WA dealer that I paid a $2500 deposit on. There are no Ts & Cs, nor have I signed anything. I don't suppose they have to honour my Invoiced price even if they can't supply until 2023?

It's still Russian owned at the end of the day, one of the articles says that their money is in a non-sanctioned Russian bank at this time.

I also understand Ural management in the USA are presently trying to arrange the build outside of Russia. I would be putting a minimum deposit up and accepting the wait. Just my 2c. I am guessing that 35% is on parts too? If Toyota can build in Malaysia, can Ural build in Taiwan? All the castings are done there and they are the world champs at micro chips or some such.

Ural is owned by an American Russian. Corporate URAL is in USA. They are also the worldwide distributor. The bikes are assembled in Russia with components from many countries with just some metal fabrication done at the factory……..Ural is NOT Russian owned. It is easy for me to say as I am not waiting for a new bike, but…….just chill for a while guys and see what eventuates. Corporate URAL has survived near ruin a number of times in the past 25 years and I have confidence Illia will make it happen again.

Ilya is actually a Russian American (not an American Russian) and there are other investors (and maybe some employees) still involved that are silent partners of the Russian Company that ultimately underpins the production in Russia. There would be some arrangement between the IMZ URAL America and IMZ Ural (Russia) companies. This would be set up to facilitate easy dealings with dealers in the USA and worldwide and for tax and payroll purposes in the USA. They really had to set up an American entity to service their biggest market there. Ilya may very well be the sole owner of IMZ URAL America, but URAL is still a Russian company (eg. reference to Russian bank account) and a good part of production (frames, tubs, motor castings etc) is still there and exported, on which these Tariffs will apply.
I might add since all this began, the local dealer (holding my deposit), I haven't spoken to at all, and I had to reach out to Ural Australia to get any comment from them (they knew previously of my order as I talk with them more than the dealer). You would think they would be a little more proactive with customers that have bikes on order (there can't be that many - maybe a dozen?).
