I first saw a Ural in 73' at the Cold Kiwi Rally, it certainly wasn't having a problem in the snow like I was on my Kawazaki H2, not that we had far to ride. Go forward a couple of years, Brisbane, a BMW R90s, Ducati 900SS then a Gold Wing 1000GL as I decided touring was more my style of riding. 1977 Alpine Rally two up on the Gold Wing, I can't remember how many times I dropped it in the mud coming in through the forest. I befriended a couple of guys on outfits from Sydney who were helping until they had to move on to the rally site. Needless to say before the 78' Alpine I had a DJP modified with a leading link (made by a guy in Frankston Vic) , VW steering damper etc etc it was so easy to ride. That lasted until the second child was coming along, needed to buy a house so the outfit went. Back in bikes after 17 years in 97' a BMW1100GS, 1150GSA, 2014 1200RT and now a 2021RT. For the dirt I have a 2007 650Dakar, bought from #1 son seen in the outfit. I'm off to the Karuah Rally need month, stopping off at Kentucky for some training with Jon. I think I would be fine on the road it's the dirt that I want to do, the Dakar will go and the Ural will be my dirt bike. I've gone with the Red Sparrow Accent package with slate grey plus a few other extras, due for May delivery. I've asked for a price on Nitron shocks, I like the idea of more travel, does anyone have experience with these? The Dakar has Wilbur shocks and modified front forks it made such a difference in handling.

Welcome aboard phil, I think the Nitrons are same travel. I have HCS as do a few others. The ride is an improvement over the Sachs. You will find the Ural a different beast to a modified solo but once you get used to it I am sure you will enjoy…..especially on the dirt. I have done many kms with Jon on dirt and none better to get you up to speed. Expect to see you at the Alpine this year…🤣 I have been a regular since the 80’s.

My Gold Wing with the leading link was great on the seal and ok off road not that I rode it that hard, always concerned something would break. I have been to many rallies and OCR's in the past 25 years and so many outfits tend to need bits welding back when they arrive. I think the Ural with its three wheels that are the same and the construction hopefully will negate this. Actually I wouldn't mind coming back to the Alpine last time I was there was I think 2000 with my son on the back of the 1100GS, maybe he would be keen to come its a good idea.

Phil, I have done 5 OCR’s on a Ural. 👍👍 I would guess something like 40000km in doing it. All good on a Ural. 😇

Find it interesting that people haven’t got a Ural, haven’t ridden a Ural but have already decided they need to change the bike. I have always found it best to buy a bike, ride it and then make modifications if necessary. Mind you it’s good if you are buying a second hand bike because you get the people who have added $2000 worth of extras and only ridden it 450km’s.

Could be worse, they could buy a Ural, ride a Ural then decide to add all the other bit's folks here recommend only to find they make no difference or they will never use them Having said that I think shocks are one of those aftermarket additions worth every penny...

Good to hear from you miss Rosewood breakfast with you Macca and Chris. Barry, me and Snuffy are doing lots of off road, suppose we just except the Ural as a utilitarian vehicle which does the dirt really well. Mind you would be interesting one day to try 3 wheel discs and two wheel drive, but that would take all the fun out of it, and soften us up.
