Just back from a solo lap of Aus on my VStrom 1000. For the first time ever I found myself avoiding rough and/or sandy roads for fear of coming off and not being able to pick the dam bike up again! I started thinging my adventure riding days are over and was in a state of dispair... they I saw some nutter on a Ural. Very quickly I reclassified him as brilliant. He can go almost anywhere without fear... I know Urals are famously unreliable and that this comes with the teritory. Just wondering if any of you know of any "how to fix your Ural" courses? Once I am competent I'm planning another familiarisation ride around Aus and then when I retire I want to do overland to London (and maybe beyond)... Are Urals ok for extremely long expedition trips? Cheers, D.

Hi Drew, I have been all over Australia with very little issue. Many 1000km days. Melbourne to Cape York and return 9500km. much of it on dirt. Great travelling rig and the current models will do 100kph (without headwind) all day. Not great in heavy soft sand. Avoid sand dunes. It will take you a bit longer to get where you are going but you will see more along the way. 👍 Maintenance is simple stuff.

Hi there Drew. We are both 70+. Had a lifetime on all manner of bikes from DT Yamaha through to BMW GSA adventure bikes and pocket rockets, Ducati, with many outback adventures, and even to Europe. We are Ural owners and loving the learning curve. Never had a Ural before, and never ridden an outfit. Go for it. And the sooner the better. Like you, I thought my adventure riding was over. Don't waste the 10 years I did before making a decision. These days they are not cheap, but much more reliable than before. Good luck. Lots of keen riders here. Stay tuned as the annual 3 day adventure ride is being run out of Port Macquarie NSW in early September. There are usually extensive videos posted for this one.

Hi Drew, There are a couple of us in Dee Why. Send a PM and we can meet up somewhere local. Cheers Mick G'Day Drew, I'm the other Mick in Dee Why. As others have said, they're a great traveling vehicle, so long as you don't want to get there in too much of a hurry. My longest was Glen Innes to Sydney, without freeways or major highways. A bit worn by the end, but a great day.
In Feb/March my wife and I rode to Tasmania and back, just under 5,000km, two up for a month. As the other Mick said, if you want to catch up, send a PM and we can show you around the bikes.
