I have been down the Mt Mee road from D'Aguilar and up it again from Dayboro but never on the Ural.
So on Sunday, when I realised the sky was almost clear, I hit the road. I hadn't planned to go to Mt Mee, I was just doing a post servicing shake down run and wanted to get a few solid kilometers under my belt.
Having spent all of January bike-less I had plenty of time to read forums, look for tweaks and minor adjustments. I fitted an original handlebar that was sent up from Urala, put the luggage rack and spare back on, refitted the chair windscreen and the spare Jerry can holder (that was an interesting episode in its own right - when I took it off there were wear marks on the can from the mounting screws. Not surprising, someone had tried to wrap the holder around the back of the chair rather than shim it out so it was straight.) The bars were changed because I didn't like the hand position of the aftermarket ones fitted by a previous owner. The other modification was to drop the pre-load on all the shocks to the base notch and see what happened. Seems to me that the whole thing was a bit twitchy and maybe this would make a difference. The last thing I did was adjust the sidecar brake so that it wasn't as severe.
So to the ride, out of the blocks and down the road through Strathpine and out to Petrie. I was liking the changes already, the bars were more comfortable the bike seemed more settled and I was generally happier
Petrie to Dayboro has some good high speed corners, nothing tight enough to lift the chair but enjoyable at speed. I opened it up and let it run. No throttle lag on deceleration, positive cornering and the engine seemed to be running well. I was having trouble getting used to the gear changes being so effortless.
Normally I would head back down to Samsonvale from Dayboro and complete the lap, but for some reason I turned right and headed for Mt Mee.
It was a pleasant ride, a few tight corners that required some concentration but overall enjoyable. I went past the Dahmongah lookout and could smell the coffee. There is a 2k winding stretch just after that which wasn't much fun as it was downhill and I let a few riders past to avoid abuse. Turned around at the Dag Pub and came back up the hill stopping for a coffee this time.
If I am tempted to do that again I might just drop in to the lookout for the coffee, it was that good.
Don't think I would bother with the bit between there and D'Aguilar. On the way up and back I got snapped by the photographer at QLDPerfomancePics. He was kind and didn't show the frame of me holding up a heap of BMW adventure riders ...
Next weekend - Beaudesert to Rathdowney, Cougal to Casino then Grafton, Coutts Crossing, Dundurrabin, Moonpar and into Dorrigo.
Then back.
