Just had three days in the Victorian High Country. Four sidecars and a solo rider who left his sidecar at home.
918.7 km. We left Orbost on the Yamby road headed for Mila via Delegate. What a fantastic dirt road......smooth as the proverbial.
We visted Raymond creek falls, where we lunched...
Just prior to Delegate the BMW had a “fail to proceed”. We laughed and took photos and I told him if he had a Ural he would be on his way in 10 minutes with the spare fitted.....hmmmmm, tubeless tyre. The repair kit came out, and being the mechanic in the group, I fitted a couple of plugs in the hole and we were on our way again.........still took longer than fitting the spare on a Ural.
we camped on a friends property at Mila......very cosy it was too.
BMW tyre was flat again next morning so off to Bonang for a repair. That done, we headed for Ensay via the dirt of course.....dusty dirt roads, plantation tracks........hmmmm.....run out of track......sent solo to investigate....yep, road again about half a km through the crap, so we ventured on and on. Reached a “road closed ahead” sign, so we continued of course. A further 3 or 4 km up the road our leader at time was chatting with a logging truck driver when I arrived. He called the logging crew on the radio and told them we were coming, so all was good, and they let us go through. We did have a few encounters with logging trucks in the area.........Fxxxx......sometimes there is just not enough room and the heart rate gets a good work out.
We refueled near Orbost and took a sealed road to Buchan were we phoned the lady at the Ensay pub about 4 pm to say we would be there between 5 or 6. She was opening that night just for us guys, as not usually open Tuesdays........We arrived just on 7 pm as she had just given up on us.
.........Made it by the skin of our teeth after having to turn back from our impassable dirt road route which should have been 50km to Ensay instead of the 90km via sealed road. We were on a track that was deteriorating rapidly and I was faced with a steep drop into a creek, that was all doable. However, if the track became impassable further on.....and we had one towing a trailer......there was no way of getting back up the bank as it was 20metres of marbles and steep. So we turned around and went back. Our 59km short cut turned into a 60km round trip adventure and then, as it was starting to get dark, we still had to do the 90km sealed road run to Ensay.......bugger.
Sue at the Ensay pub was fantastic. $7.00 room for the night and she cooked us all a fab hamburger and chips.
Next day was Ensay to Briagolong on the dirt cf course, via Swifts Creek, Brookville and Bullumwaal.
