Hi all Just an observation on speed from a probably too over cautious guy. I have not done the full calculation, but 100 kmh on a Ural is roughly 4500 rpm. Now, bearing in mind a red line of 5400 rpm, that is a lot of work the poor thing is doing. I appreciate the good primary balance of a boxer motor (BMW max continuous is 200 revs short of red line), but would you run any other motor you have at that high a percentage of red line? By my reckoning at 100km/h Urals are doing 4,350 rpm, which is 80% of maximum revs.
4th gear road speed is 23 km per 1,000rpm; and 92 km/h is 4,000 rpm, about 74% of maximum revs I tend to ride long stretches at 90 to 95km/h, but the bike will happily run at 100 to 105 all day, every day. The factory recommended sustained max of 105 can be safely followed.
In an earlier life I used to muck about with boats. With them many owners and users regularly ran outboards and performance V8s & 6s at 80% of max revs on long runs.

Hi,
so far I am aware the 40Hp get the motor by 5600rpm! And the redline is by 6000rpm. But on the other hand nobody can give you proper data from the motor at all. I know this things only from the German/Austria Dealers. The travel speed is 105km/h , as already sad here. Myself would not dare this speed constant on a trip. Around the 90 looks good to me as well. And what my uncle from Poland explained me, take the speed what motor can do. Take 75% of this and this is your top speed what you can hold for traveling on the flat road. Ural top speed so far you dare 120! 75% is 90.

The redline is either 5,400 or 5,600rpm. I have seen both in recent factory publications. A number of us have seen a GPS speed of 127km/h on the flat, so I reckon this is the top speed.
Ride at whatever speed is comfortable at any given time, but you can be confident the bike can withstand sustained speeds of 100 to 105km/h with ease.

Can of worms time! I did post this without doing the sums so stand corrected. By my reckoning 4500 = 100 kph. At 5600 ( as on my spec plate on frame ) theoretical top speed of 150 ish. So yes 100 all day is achievable. So each to his own. 90 to 100 is fine to see the sights and smell the dead roos . For those who need to know: RPM of engine / 1.19 (fourth gear) / 4.62 (final drive) x 60 = RPH of rear wheel. Multiply by rolling circumference of wheel in km = kph. Rolling circ is: measure from ground to centre of axle (in mm), x 2 x 3.14 (pi) / 1000 (meters) /1000 (Km).

Given "normal" conditions....and gps speed, not speedo reading....
URAL continuous comfort running speed = 100 kph Human comfort speed = 90 - 95 kph
best of my long days was 1198 km following days of around 900 km. I am not averse to long days in the saddle. I have absolute faith in my Ural which is capable of running faster and longer than I. I do run at 100+ but only when the trip is less than a few hours. I can have 1 less fuel stop on a 1000 km run by travelling at 90 rather than 100. this almost makes up the time difference anyway. lee

Lugging an engine like the Ural, at low engine speed in too high a gear is far more detrimental than continuous running at high revs. dont worry about wearing it out. it will do 100,000 km OK. after so much fun you wont mind the cost of a rebuild.............................JUST ASK NORM

I have seen 100kmh on the speedo in third, on a hill (eg. Liverpool Range) but only for a short distance! Don't know what revs, but the engine just wanted to keep revving. I find 100kmh is a good speed on the highway (speedo, not GPS), and around 200kms before needing to switch to reserve. I'm happy with that- 160- 200kms is good for 1 go- then a short break to fuel keeps the blood flowing. 550kms easy for a day, for 2-3 days in a row. The bench seat is very comfortable!

Jon taught me how effective 3rd gear can be racing him up hills on some of his Adventure Rides. At 5,600rpm 3rd is good for 61mph, which is 98km/h. It can be GREAT fun hitting uphill righthand bends at full throttle in 3rd gear at near max revs! Especially on dirt and gravel roads.

Don't worry about the speedo or rev's,just ride as hard as is comfortable,the bike will take it.
