Sounds like this is a definite goer! From some research it seems the track from Coober Pedy to Emu is generally the 'easier' part of the Anne Beadell Highway. Sand dunes and some washed out bits, corrugations that are fairly bad (read bone shaking at 25 kph in a 4WD). Further west, the corrugations get better, but the track itself gets more twisty, with rocky bits and more dunes. Permits from Department of Defence must be applied for on an individual vehicle basis, at lest eight weeks in advance of trip. There are a couple of times each year that the Woomera Prohibited Area is closed to new entry. These are used for testing and other exercises. These dates, and the permits, are published in plenty of time on their web site. www.defence.gov.au/woomera/To access Tallaringa Conservation Pk, either a Desert Parks Pass or permit just for Tallaringa is needed. I am not sure about Aboriginal Lands permits. Definitely needed further west. I will make some calls soon to confirm. Although, as they are free and quite easy to obtain, it would not hurt to get them anyway. Vehicle preparation is obviously a critical item. I hope I am preaching to the converted and this is nothing new. I'll get out the way and let you all dream on .

Been talking to a few people about this trip possibilities. Brother-in-law John has driven it twice in the last couple of years in his Cruiser. He has done about 200,000k of desert travel on most of Australia's desert tracks and he says the corrugations on this stretch are possibly the worst in Aus and they really damage vehicles. Id like the trip to do a big loop. Coober Pedy, Totems. then down to Cook on the railway, then the "Head of the Bight" back to Cook then follow the railway East. Another mate in SA said the corrugations killed their heavy trailer behind a Trakka. They were resupplying a camel expedition. He thinks he might be able to drum up some sort of support vehicle if one is welcome and the trip looks like actually happening. Still dreaming and I expect to make it to Hawker by Sept 7 this year.

Thanks for the info Chris. I got a bit of a bum steer on the track conditions. Bad corrugations can be negotiated at the appropriate speed. The loop through Volks Hill to Cook is well over 700 km, so a support vehicle to haul enough fuel for half a dozen outfits would be more than welcome. How ever, my idea is still only Emu and back.

Hi to everyone. This is just a thought ( albeit a 15 year old one!). I have had the idea of going to visit the Totem 1 and 2 atomic test sites at Emu Field in outback SA. Up until now I have never really had the right vehicle to try it. This is a 600 km round trip from Coober Pedy, on the first section of the Ann Beadell Highway. And as such requires complete self sufficiency for about 5 - 6 days. Hard to do on a solo bike, and I only have a 2 wd ute, which has the clearance do it, but could get stuck in the softer sand bits. However, the Ural is ideal. There is a need for permits from the Dep't of defence and a Desert Parks Pass, plus permission from Mabel Ck station. I am looking at August/September 2015. Maybe as an add on to FUSA (if we do it again). If anyone has thoughts or ideas, please let me know. Great Idea : I know from a mate who did it last year the road condition was harsh with corrugation's etc, they did it with 2 x 4WDs. You can buy fuel at a mid way section , about 750km in from Coober Pedy, its 1350km all the way to Laverton in WA, several permits are required. And a visit to the "A" sites would be fantastic. Don't forget to tell me when you intend to go and what plans you have as I would love to join you.
Yep I`m in for the adventure

Hi everyone, It's been a while since there was any more thought on this trip. Even though it was my idea, I'm afraid I have to bail out for this year. A combination of going onto shift work and other people already booking leave has made it difficult. I have also got back into playing trombone in various bands after a 16 year layoff, so more commitments there as well. However, I have got in early for leave in 2016, so the trip is not dead, just sleeping. Cheers Michael Sent from my SM-G900I using proboards
