Hi to everyone.
This is just a thought ( albeit a 15 year old one!). I have had the idea of going to visit the Totem 1 and 2 atomic test sites at Emu Field in outback SA. Up until now I have never really had the right vehicle to try it.
This is a 600 km round trip from Coober Pedy, on the first section of the Ann Beadell Highway. And as such requires complete self sufficiency for about 5 - 6 days. Hard to do on a solo bike, and I only have a 2 wd ute, which has the clearance do it, but could get stuck in the softer sand bits. However, the Ural is ideal.
There is a need for permits from the Dep't of defence and a Desert Parks Pass, plus permission from Mabel Ck station. I am looking at August/September 2015. Maybe as an add on to FUSA (if we do it again).
If anyone has thoughts or ideas, please let me know.

Hi Norm That makes two! It would probably be a good idea to limit something like this to fairly small group. Around five to six vehicles.

We had 10 bikes last June doing ROARy, plus two cars. 17 people all up, and it was a good sized group. Especially when we got bogged in the sand. Fuel and water will be the most important items to carry. 600km, if fuel isn't available along the way, means each bike would carry 60litres petrol( tank plus 40lt in jerry cans) plus water.
I suggest you email UA so it can be included in their next newsletter, and maybe put it on the relevant FB pages. You'll soon see if others are interested.

Im interested.fuel could be an issue, unless we have a recovery vehical of some sort, soft sand seem's to be the main thing that will stop a ural. Got all the ingrediants i'm looking for in a ride, bring it on

Getting a great response to this idea! There is no fuel or water available. Definitely BYO everything. I cannot say what the track conditions will be. It is called the Ann Beadell Highway, but has not had a grader on it since the 60's. It is a very narrow overgrown set of wheel tracks. Too many vehicles can be as bad as not enough! I shall be making enquiries in the next month or so.

A 4WD show on telly last week showed a journey along this "road" My immediate thought on seeing it was- "why did I sell the Ural before I did this?" As long as there is no rain, it should be a walk in the park- go for it.

Sounds good to me. My brother-in-law has been on this road in recent years, I'll see what he thinks.
