The only reasons you won’t get up a hill in first are : Plainly too steep. Too slippy surface. Lack of skill.
A one wheel drive has the issue of no steering when it gets too steep and you just go left. In reverse you would simply have NO traction.
The skills test in the video is a very good exercise (taken in small learning steps) as reversing down hill is probably the most dangerous thing you will ever do on a URAL.……and reversing uphill might be the most difficult. 🤣

Funny this subject has been raised. It was on the recent UAR that Jon Taylor and I were discussing inexperienced or unskilled riders negotiating their first steep climb with loose, gravelly, very slippery roads and what happens when they stall or stop on that climb. Jon knowing that we’ve both had a bit of experience in these situations said from his experience (teaching people to ride) generally if someone stalls or stops and are lacking skills panic sets in and they grab a handful of front brake and an involuntary reverse is underway until they realise that it’s the back brake that’s going to stop them, hopefully before it’s to late. Getting going again is hard on a 1WD but with a little patience and skill you’ll get away again. The big secret in all this is don’t ever stall or stop on a steep, slippery climb. Keep the revs up (even if you have to ride the clutch), avoid changing gears and most importantly.....”go for it”. 😎

... Keep the revs up (even if you have to ride the clutch), avoid changing gears and most importantly.....”go for it”. 😎 And a clutch change isn't that difficult if you do manage to fry it. I ride solo most of the time so there is no peer pressure to attempt things above my skill level, I look at an obstacle and say yeah nah. ... Can get lonely and scary sometimes. oldmate said recently that trying to penetrate Watagans is scary alone. That fear tends to quash the bravado. Knowing when to turn around saves the need for Maxitracts, winches, jacks and friends Disclaimer:- I have nothing against riding with friends, but one has to have some to achieve that
