Hi All
As a newbie and yet to ride a sidecar motorcycle (formerly 2 wheels - Honda VT750S and a Kawasaki farm quad bike), I'm interested in people's experience in terms of learning to ride the sidecar;
Obviously I've read a lot and watched a lot but I was keen to see what other's views were in making the switch, in particular whether it is achievable for smaller framed riders like myself?

Have a look at some "Creakyrider" youtube video..He is on here and describes his learner exploits very well. He rides a Yamaha Adventure bike as well.

Previously ridden road and dirt bikes (type of bike and length of time riding isn't important. It has no bearing whatsoever on side car use and that includes quads, trikes and mules or even CanAm's for that matter).
I bought a clapped out KZ1100 with a DJP sidecar from a guy in Townsville (twice the horsepower of a Ural on a bad day). He explained the basics and I rode it through town and back out to Alligator Creek (about 28k's) before I got it onto the dirt and tried to figure out how it worked. Totally counterintuitive to anything I had ridden before and it hated the high crown roads of the North but left me smiling and laughing so much I just kept riding it. Couple of things I did really early on taught me valuable lessons. I found a big patch of tar (carpark) and rode around slowly, figure 8's, stops and all the other stuff an advanced rider training course will teach. I did the same on a big patch of dirt. if you can't ride slowly you will never ride fast successfully. It is a matter of relearning almost everything, even honing your defensive riding skills. Training is the key regardless of how much other stuff you have ridden. Whether you train yourself or not is up to you. If I had known of Jon Taylor back then I most certainly would have done one of his courses.

Thanks, any smaller frame riders have experience on the physical aspect of handling, or is this bike only ridden by professional Russian bear wrestlers?

I'm 65kg wringing wet. As Andy said, training of whatever ilk and get out and ride. High crown roads (again as Andy said), and high winds on open roads are a challenge initially. Get out and build those shoulder muscles!
Cheers

Geez, you like to live dangerously in this day and age…….we have many very capable….make that extremely capable women URAL riders who are definitely not “bears”. Yes a URAL requires a little upper body strength, not a massive amount but the correct technique and ergonomics does wonders.
Steering 101….. Sit up straight and steer. Use your knees. Outside arm straight. Inside arm….drop the elbow.
……..Shall I start a list of those ladies and the odd jockey sized male that will be looking to slap you around the ears ? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Bobbsie, post that photo of the URAL girls please. 👀
