The starter on my 2015 (less than 4000km) has been playing up. Sometimes starting okay, sometimes just clicking. I was advised by Clare that this starter is not very good and a better model is available. For a price of course... With nothing to loose I stripped the solenoid, it being most likely the culprit. I found a manufacturing defect, one coil wire was cut-off short of the terminal by about 0.5mm and was connected to the terminal only by a thin solder bridge. It had to fail sooner or later. I have now extended the wire, re-soldered and put all back together. Working perfectly now, but for how long?
Does anyone have info on what the problem is with these starters that would warrant a replacement? Should I wait until it fails again or cough up for a new one now?
On another note, I have removed the kickstart as I was unable to start the bike with it. Much easier to shift now and I'm using front foot for up and down as suggested elsewhere on this forum. Works great! No more crunching - most of the time, just a satisfying 'clunk'.

Cheers Taz No idea re your starter motor apart from rather than replace it maybe wait to see if it fails, worst case you could maybe bump start the bike if some volunteer muscle was available. Interesting point re the kick starter, I have rotated my gear lever by one spline tooth to lower the rear rocker pad, I think Haitch has done the same. Mine will be tested today, however the vestigial kick starter certainly gets in the way and removal may be the next course of action. A "belt and braces" approach could be to keep the kick starter and any necessary tools in the sidecar for refitting in an emergency, back in '78 the Kawasaki Z1R had the kick lever stored under the seat.

Starter info > Click Here < The old black starter is prone to failure, the new short one isn't and was introduced on the 2016 bikes. Mine failed around the same time (4,000) and I had a go at repairing it several time then just gave up. The new one has worked first time every time.

Early starter issue is usually the solenoid contact. De soldering is required for access to clean the contact. CRC inside and working the solenoid can get it contacting but a proper clean is the go. Have not used the kick starter in 14 years……I use the rear wheel to turn engine for valve adjust. Push start is easy peasy on the flat…..unless you are bogged 😂😂

Push start info is good, many years back a mate who owns a Guzzi Le Mans stopped at a servo to see blokes standing around a Guzzi with a puddle of gearbox oil underneath, apparently the result of an attempt to bump start the bike.

Ural…….Second or third gear ONLY……. Not first NEVER reverse
Guzzi would have been a first gear explosion………see it happen to numerous cars and even a truck.

Yeah, cleaned the contacts too while I had it apart, but they looked pretty good actually. Still starting perfectly. Might just strip and clean the starter once a year. I agree the push starting might be a lot easier than the kicker. And thanks for linking to the other thread, andyh. Hadn't seen that one.
