Hi all,
My bike is due for a service soon.
Nothing major, oils, filters, fuel filters, valves, rotate the tires, check all bolts for looseness, the list goes on and on. Anything else??
The standard torque for the "Valve Cover Bolts", (I assume rocker cover bolts) in the manual is 12nm or 8.8fp.
I've read somewhere that the silicon gaskets need a lot less torque than the standard paper gaskets.
Mine seems to have the updated Silicon rocker cover gaskets.
Is there a different torque value for the silicone gaskets??
Thanks.
Mick

Yes………very light. Just watch the gasket and do not let it squash out. Slight compression of the gasket is all that is needed. It is not much more than finger tight.

Yes, clean surfaces well and make sure they are dry. Loctite not necessary. The bolts do not come loose.

Thank you gentlemen!
I pulled the covers off, and the 4 bolts weren't tight at all, just tight enough! However, the mating surfaces of the rocker covers had been machined flat at the factory, as they should be, but it left a bit of a sharp edge on the inside edge of the mating surface. Which cut into the soft silicone material, and sliced sections of the gaskets, to a degree that the re-usble-ness of them was a bit dodgy! Luckily, Jake had left a set of original cork gaskets in the boot, (Thanks Jake!!!),so all ended up OK.
So if anyone is using the silicone gaskets, it might be a good idea to hit the covers with a fine file, emery paper, something to get rid of a potential problem.
Cheers,
Mick

New reinforced silicone gaskets now available from Ural……..these should be the go. Yes, I saw those. Not sure if silicon though. Ural US via their video, calls them "reinforced rubber" will see if I can find a link to the video. Here ya go.

Yes, might be rubber. Either way, bonded to steel they will be the goods for long life and not so easily misfitted by clumsy owners…🤣🤣🤣. Still comming in fairly pricey though. Will be interesting to see what price they are when they get to the Australian site………I think I saw $30 US each so probably close to A$100 👎😳

$Wow!
I saw cork sheets on ebay for not many dollars, and big enough to cut out maybe 8 or 10 gaskets.
Might an option foward.
After all, our machines are not really 20th century beasts. I've made gaskets out of wheetbix boxes that have lasted for months on a diesel engine.
Just a thought,
Mick.

🤣🤣Not a corker of a thought……I will stick with my silicone. Have had them off and back on a couple of times and they are still like new.
