G’day Haitch, I am sure Lee will vouch for me, Simone and I have been camping with bikes for many years as well as bush walking, I run a inventory of camping gear and weigh everything. We go light weight with tents, sleeping bags and mattress, as for cooking we keep this really simple. Before you pack lay it all out and look at what is essential what is nice to have and then look a at the “why am I taking “. Once sorted then weigh whats left and that should guide you on where to put things. Wish you well Jake Thanks for your contribution Jake. We appreciate all the contributions so far. The biggest take away so far, is to position "Her Ladyship" in the chair. NOT as pillion. Therefore, most of the heavy stuff will be in and under her cockpit. We still use lightweight hiking stuff from decades ago. Its nearly as decrepit as we are. But still functioning. Only, going bush foe a few days, just to see how we manage. Cheers Haitch.

Many thanks for this site sidecar.com/hal-kendall-operators-manual/ lots of interesting reading. Back in the day when we were off to rallies around the country, pre kids, then with one toddler we never really considered weight distribution. I see that with outfits at OCR's they pile them high, it's good in the desert to have a mate with cold beers. My camping days are over unless there's no other option, lots of lightweight camping gear in tubs waiting. My wife, who hasn't been a pillion since I got back to riding 25 years ago, that was after 17 years of no bikes. She's happy to "camp" at pubs as long as they have an ensuite :-) Our April/May delivery for the "Yellow Submarine" Weekender- Sunshine, her name not mine is now for delivery June/July, so I have plenty of time to fill the garage with farkles. Shocks, screen and 11.4l Rotopax have been ordered and on their way, what next?

What we're doing is figuring a "Plan B" ie what do we really need if "Plan A" fails or the body can't cope. As far as what next? I have fitted some Barkbuster "Blizzard" hand guards at Jon Taylors suggestion. Just got a friction type throttle restraint and setting it up. Front and sidecar mudguard racks have been fitted after delivery. Not Ural spec. Heck, you could buy or make a Ural transporter trailer. I am just completing my 10 x 6 with full width ramp and winch. That should fill in some time and release some rubles from your account.

Thanks everyone for their contribution and to keep everyone on their toes. Who uses a "Chillie Bin/Eski" for what, and where does it travel? How is it kept chilled?? Thanks all.

I wont get my 2023 GU in time for the Alpine Rally so don't have any long distance at this stage until the OCR 2024 at Arkaroola SA. Love to take my wife but thinking maybe she would fly in to Hawker and out Adelaide. I'll take camping gear for emergencies, maybe. Booking.com is my go to, especially overseas. Did you get a Atlas Throttle lock? I have had the bar end ones across a few bikes, currently on my 07 Dakar, I do like the adaptive cruise control on my RT. I will go down to see Greg at Rocky Creek he sells the Atlas, I have a number of his stuff didn't realise he was a Ural guy. I was thinking about a trailer but always thought that was cheating,Haitch Ural Trailer Hire? Now there's an idea, where are you located?

A 12v "chilly bun" (I came across the ditch in 1974, after a few beers sometimes I revert) was on my list of why nots, I remember coming down to the Strzelecki Track from the Northern Flinders on the way to the OCR Thargomindah. A mate with his wife were off the track under the shade with their outfit, it was 11am, "hey boys do you want a beer?" At that time I realised that sidecars had their merits! I guess it is a case of size and where do you put it?

Trailer…… Never feel embarrassed by doing the “distance” with your Ural on a trailer. Long distance rides are great but you have to have the time. I have done 5 OCR’s on the Ural. The last one (not the longest) was 7500km and it does take it’s toll when in the mid 70’s. Geez, when I got home it was at least three days before I wanted another ride….🤣🤣 ……..With our upcoming 8 day tour in SA I will transport as the wife does not enjoy the long rides just to get there. We also expect to be going to the West following the Ural event.

After riding two longish days to Melbourne from Sydney, I can understand the use of a trailer if you’re on a timetable. Sloggin down a freeway fully loaded two up is not everyone’s idea of fun.

Plan "A" is to ride. But plan "B" is to trailer. Not quite finished just yet. Cabin is booked. If riding, then a few cruisey days and pubs to get there. Perhaps a couple days on KI at the end.
