Hi, I changed the oil in the FD, and there is a LOT of gunk and swarf stuck to the magnetic drain plug! Way more than I've seen on any magnetic plug. The swarf was very fine, no big lumps of metal, and quite shiny when i rubbed it between my fingers. The bike is a 2020 Ranger, done 20,000 km, and been well serviced by me and the previous owner. Any ideas on where it all comes from, and the best way to repair it? Thanks, Mick

I would be having a good look mick. But that's just me. An old maintenance man from oil and gas. Looks like hard facing might have disappeared. But I'm new to Urals. Hopefully, a few guru's will jump in. Or try the SS page.

Mick, I’ve had that much swarf on my FD magnetic plug before and now just passing 54,000 kms on it. I’ve found it all settles down after a while. Never any large chunks of metal just that fine stuff you have. I always drop the oil asap after a good run to get it up to temp and always used 80W-90 gear oil. Cheers Wheels.

Same as Wheels, if it is a very fine paste then it is similar to mine at 40K - looks bad, but when you wipe it onto a rag it doesn't really contain any shards or slivers. Mine has the original crown and pinion and only came apart once to replace a cracked face plate. If there is anything solid on the plug then maybe pull the plate and watch all the needle rollers escape all over your work space? My guess is that you won't find anything. The newer FD's (14 onwards) seem to be pretty reliable.
