We are sat on the Mitta Mitta river in the high country of NE Victoria. Sipping a cask merlot. Life is good.

Put a strap around your spare. It will rotate as the heat melts whatever glue they use on the rubber pads under the spare. My mod to the seat will be left as is, but leaving the nut off at the front and wrapping some electrical tape around the stud, pushing the seat front on will be my next trial. Then, if successful it may only be a 30 sec removal. Go to a rubber shop and buy some 15mm or so thick laminated rubber (not vinyl or other goop) but solid rubber laminated with a canvas centre. Cut the rubber into a square, big enough to cover the wheel hub, and some. Remove the wheel, put the rubber in place of the little square doodads. Put a little grease or copperslip on the thread before you put on the round IMZ retainer nut and do it up 'feckin' tight. I changed my spare over to the rear in August last year, when the rear tyre was half worn. The spare has never been off since. I check the nut on the odd occasion and it's always tight. The bike has done two Ural Adventures, a trip to Tassie and a trip to Queensland.

I drilled the round retainer and put in a small piece of lockwire to the frame because I didn't trust the metal they made the round thing from. One twist unlock and hasn't moved since.

I must be missing something here. I have had a spare wheel on the carrier for over 150,000km all over Oz without ever losing it.

The wheel then comes loose and rotates/rattles around where it sits. There was a post some time back on how to fix it.

My do hickies did a runner on a trip to Wagga, wheel came lose, cap on spare ran away and Son only noticed when the spare started to move around, a lot. Used a tie down on the spare, turned around and Son's young eagle eyes spotted the cap on the side of the road 10kms later. Damn that boy's good. Now use a bit of lock wire, myself.

Not gone with lock wire yet. But, the cap is always done up real tight. Do hickies reattached with a better glue. So far so good. Still strapping the spare though.
