It's never too early to organize a long ride, especially when one of you is working and you are semi-retired. Next year's OCR or Off Centre Ride is at Arkaroola in the Gammon Ranges north of the Flinders Ranges 12-14 August. We visited there on the way to the 2004 OCR in Innamincka just a detour from Brisbane in order to get there. To be honest I can't remember seeing any Urals at OCR's they may have been there but I was taken by more exotic outfits, especially those who carried cold beer to be offered in the middle of nowhere. As a newbie 2023 GU since late July I thought those who used a trailer were taking the easy way out and should toughen up. But after riding down and back to Port Macquarie to the UAR, I get it, our locally made Just Trailer is being delivered in January! First long haul will be to Uralla for the riding part of the Karuah Rally. But I digress, I have already rented a cabin at the Arkaroola Resort, not many options, and a couple of days at Wilpena Pound in a tent, not a pup tent! SWMBO is flying in to Whyalla via Adelaide, booked as a reward flight on Qantas. We will stay overnight at Hawker Caravan Park cabins leaving the car and trailer there. Afterwards maybe a few days in the Clare valley testing. For those who have already done the Flinders and Gammon Ranges it is truly great riding in the Flinders/Gammon Ranges in all directions. It may be a bit more work on a Ural but on my 97' GS1100 it was exceptional riding with amazing views, it can only be better 20 years on. There are three of us trailering from SE QLD already and a couple more BMW 1150/1200 outfits who will ride all the way. Attachments:

Hmmm. There might be 1 or 2 from Vic as well. We've been there on 2 wheels and 4. But not on 3 wheels. Never on the OCR.

Haitch you should consider it, apart from a few of us on Urals there is always some amazing outfits from the sublime to the ridiculous. That's what I thought in 2002 at Urandangi, as I was hanging off the verandah of the pub hydrating. This outfit turned up he had come across from WA via tracks in as straight a line as he could. The Engel fridge on the back, hand winch and solar panel pack on the front of the chair. 21 years later it is perhaps a more common site, but checking out the sidecar mods has been part of my OCR experience ever since. I missed the 2022 OCR at Adels Grove as I had just come back from riding in the US and could not get a leave pass. Who would have thought that I would be on a sidecar for the next and with my wife?!

I think it was the Dutchmans, not sure if he is still riding it but I think why not, it was very well setup. I do remember a couple of guys doing welding repairs using a few batteries, which intrigued me.

So what you are saying don't be impressed by the antics of some of the sidecar guys, there is a lot of bullshit and bravado, bit like GS riders :-) I know/hope that once I've tightened/lockwashered/Locktite/addedqualitynylocs that the Ural won't need any structural work on it in the outback? Phil, my original Ural has been all over Oz and the only thing that has ever come loose or broken was the battery mount. I don’t use loctite either.

My 2023 when I fit accessories it appears that the nylock nuts don't like to be reused, things become loose afterwards and the bolts, washers and nuts fall off. I've needed to used the paint it came with to disguise the damage. I've added lock washers and loctite and haven't had a second loosening!
