Hi there. Hope this is right place to ask. Planning my first bigish outing on the Retro... Sydney, Geelong, Spirt of Tasmania, North Tassie and return (maybe by Flinders Ranges just to nail all the Flinders?).
I'd really rather not ride on the M1 and we'd (my wife has consented to coming as long as she gets to fly home and I buy her a new helmut), like to camp if pleasant (ie. no caravan parks!).
I was thinking of Yarrangobilly and Bright on the way down. Maybe the Ranges on the way home as I will be solo.
We leave on Apr 13 cross the Bass on Apr 17 (evening) and fly to Flinders on Apr 21. Tix booked and locked in. Coming home I have total flexibility.
Just wondering if anyone has any advice, ideas or suggestions on places to camp/visit off the beaten track and out out of the slip stream of B-doubles! Alison does not like riding more than 3 hrs a day. She may be disappointed.
Thanks all!
Drew.

Hi Drew. I would stay on the coast. Less trucks You will still have to cross the great divide somewhere. But, the closer you get to Vic the lower the hills. Do Bright etc on the way back when you have more time. Instead of going thru Melbourne. Drop down to Sorrento and get the ferry across to Queenscliff. (Less stress) It is only an hour to Geelong from there.

G'Day Drew, Gabi and I did Tasmania in Feb last year. Day one - left early before the city traffic and rode the M5 to the Camden turn off. Coffee in Camden. From there we did the Old Princes Hwy to Colo Vale via Picton. On the M31 for a short while to the Mittagong turn off, then had a stop in Berrima. From there we wound on and off the M31 and finished the day in Woomargama, a small locality just south of Holbrook. Day two - Woomargama to the Wymah Ferry across the Murray to Granya, Bulioh and Tallangatta. Cross country to Mansfield, then zig zagged our way to Mordialloc to visit freinds. Day three - Mordialloc to Geelong, via the Mornington Peninsula and the Queenscliff Ferry. Sailed on the evening Boat to Devonport. Spent almost three weeks doing a counter clockwise lap of Tas, then only had two days to get home from Geelong. Big day to Wagga, via Kyneton, Shepparton, Jerilderie etc. Final day was pretty much M31, but we did leave early, took it easy and got home quite late after a nice pub dinner in Picton.
Tas North West section was from Devonport via Sheffield, Gunns Plains and Mt Hicks to Wynyard for lunch, then stayed in Stanley for three nights visiting Woolnorth and Smithton, then down the Western Explorer rd to Strahan. Our North East section got cut, but we did go from Bicheno to the Pub in the Paddock, St Columba Falls and on to Beauty Point on the Tamar before three days at Cradle Mountain. There was lot's in between, but that's the rough idea.
We found the trucks weren't such a problem, although we did try to travel at roughly their speed. It's also nice to sit behind them at a safe enough distance, to get a bit of a slip stream. We didn't camp, we stayed at either B&B or cheap hotels.

Thanks Gents. What you are suggesting is my plan B - Princess Highway along the coast, camp at Wilson's Prom then ferry to Sorrento to Geelong... I reckon we can do this in 5 days without too much stress? D.

Thanks Gents. What you are suggesting is my plan B - Princess Highway along the coast, camp at Wilson's Prom then ferry to Sorrento to Geelong... I reckon we can do this in 5 days without too much stress? D. There is a free/cheap camp at a place called "Shallow inlet" about 40k east of Wilsons Prom. Cheaper and way less crowds. $20/night for 2. Bush camp among the Banksia trees, very quiet. Drop dunnies and water. Drive past the CP into the coastal park. Use Wikicamps. 40 min from/to Tidal River.
