Hi All, Went for a ride last week, which included unsealed roads, and now I have a crack in the chair mudguard. The pen mark is where I first found it, and it has extended about 5mm since. The nut and bolt at the front of the guard had come loose, so I fixed that. I believe that the previous owner (Jake) replaced the guard under warranty, and I believe it's a fairly common problem. Q1, Did Ivan mis-align the mounts, back in Irbit, and so put undue stress on the guard, causing it to crack? Is there a fix for this? Q2, If I drill a hole at the end of the crack, will it stop spreading? (Old trick with perspex screens.) Q3, As a last resort, are there any hints or tips for welding Top Quality Russian steel? I'm not a welder, but I'm aware of different steels, etc, and the different welding techniques. Thanks Mick

Q1 don't know. Did you need to struggle to get bolt in and out.
Q2.Perhaps.
Q3. Put a backing plate on and weld around the hole/s you drilled like a spot weld. Clean everything back to bare metal. Remove grease and dirt with acetone. Mig or Tig. Fit a backing plate to the other side as well. There is still a chance it may crack again in or on the edge of the HAZ. I can't be 100% sure, but seeing yours and "creaky riders" I think they may have changed the bracket attached to the mud guard. There are 3 attachment points. 2 in front of the axle and 1 behind the axle. Where is yours cracked? Just not clear enough to indicate which attachment point.

It's held on by 3 bolts.
One at the front, down next to the foot plate to get in and out of the chair. That was the one which was loose. One on a bracket at the rear, near the top mount of the shock, which is where the crack is, And one on a bracket, sort of opposite the rear mount.
The nut in the photo is the rear-most bracket.
Cheers
Mick

An up-date. I've decided to drill the end of the crack, and put a spot of anti-rust paint onto it, a lot easier and cheaper than pulling the guard off and getting it welded and painted. We shall see what happens! This bolt came loose while on the road, I tightened it, but it was a bit loose when I got home. When I took it out to lock-tite it, there is a bit of a gap between the guard and the mounting bracket, (about 2mm), so I've put a cork washer in ,which seems to take up the slack, and tightened it all up.. See what happens in the future! Cheers, Mick.
