Just carefully uncrimp the housing. You will see the needle spring ok. It was 6 years ago, but rotary wound spring as I remember. Easy Peasy when you see it.

Picked up a cheap digital readout from eBay after seeing the one Wheels had on his when they came to Rosewood as well as a recent post on SS which linked back to this simple digital one.
The other reason was that I don't think I will be getting a new Ural after all, so a built in Tacho is off the cards.. (eBay link to cheap tacho)Simple fit by wrapping the the wire around the lead - internal battery so no need to wire that in. Works like a charm and has enough lag built in that it reads smoothly.
I am sure that it will expire in the first downpour as the case is not waterproof. Battery is replaceable with a bit of stuffing about. Is permanently on hence the 1.1 hour reading, it is now 3.3 following the Rosewood run today. Just for Chris because he asked:- I ran it against the OBD II scantool reading direct from the ECU and it was pretty close.
The figures which are rounded a bit,
2nd Gear 50 = 4,000 - 60 is 5,000 3rd gear 60 = 3,500 - 80 = 4,500 4th gear 80 = 3,500 - 100 = 4,500 WOT on a straight it reached 5,160 and stopped while the speedo hovered around 115. I did read somewhere that the EFI models have a soft rev limiter that kicks in around 5,500 which would be reasonably easy to do in first, second and maybe third if you found a pressing reason to thrash the engine.
Why bother, well it was cheap and I was interested. 90-95 km/h in top gear is about 4,200 - 4,300 and really smooth on my bike.
The manual lists max output at 5,500 rpm producing 41 hp with max torque at 4,300 giving 42 ft lbs.
My guess is the engine is capable of sitting at 100 km/h for extended periods but since it is a hassle and the bike feels better around 90 I think I will stick to that. Plenty of cheap tacho's on ebay, some nice analog face ones too.
If it has done anything it has made my gear changes a bit smoother. Of course those of you with built in tacho's can ignore this... not jealous much..
