Back in March I found my front tyre was losing between 5 and 10 psi per day. I have strangely persisted with it for 4 months, but eventually capitulated and pulled the tube. I expected to find a leak around the valve stem...there is always rust there and the tube is 8 years old after all. What I found, was a hole large enough that I could force my little finger in to it. There was obviously a small fold in the tube resulting in a fatigue induced failure. I am a little surprised that it did not escalate into more of a problem, as we have covered a few thousand kilometres since then.
The fold, both caused the leak and prevented it from deflating quickly. I now have a new tube fitted. It is however a very experienced tube, as I have carried it as a spare for the best part of 8 years and 60000 km all over Australia. I have had a couple of punctures during that time but have fitted the spare wheel and repaired the puncture later.
So, I remember paying $37.00 for the heavy duty tube all those years ago and wondering if I really needed it. Now I figure it wise to replace the rest of the aged, stretched tubes with the next tyre changes. Had a look on the interweby Ebuy thingy and found the exact same tubes for $19.00. Ordered two and they were delivered a couple of days later from a shop 35km away......not even worth my time to go pick them up.......how good is that.
...........In another 8 years, will the tubes be just $3.00 ?
