Ok Norm, I'm a convert.
I mentioned an incident I had with the rear brake on another forum, but I'll mention it here too...
At home doing a preflight check the actuator arm on the rear brake was sticking, so I pulled the wheel out to check the springs. They were fine, the pivot just needed some lube.
On that forum Norm had a stab at me for never having checked the adjustment of the brake shoes. He was right; a check and adjust made a big difference.
Not having the fancy measuring tool others have bought for about $40 it didn't take long to work out I didn't need it. All you need is a steel rule and a second straight edge. I happened to have a couple of 6" steel rules and that was fine, it's all I needed.
If you haven't done yours, you should...

Well done, Ross. Using a steel edge sounds high tech to me, I just use chalk.

Adjust it, then go for a ride- if the brakes work, all is good! If not- probably won't matter anyway
