Went to Nowra last Friday- had a really enjoyable ride by myself, and the Ural was faultless as usual. However, on Sunday morning, all was not sounding quite as it should- you know that feeling that you can't put your finger on, but all does not seem as it should? In company with friends on their Kawasaki VN2000 and chair, we got to Windsor where we had planned on staying for the night. On leaving there yesterday morning, we headed North, stopping, as you do, at the Grey Gums Café. The noise seemed a little louder, but nothing could be found, and otherwise all was going great Rain started at Muswellbrook, then really started in earnest at Wallabadah. About 10km out of Tamworth, a rattling started up, so I figured nothing could be done in the pouring rain, so the next stop would be at Ride Motorcycles, only a couple of kms away. Not to be- with a loud (death) rattle, we came to a stop on the side of the road! Rang the NRMA- could take 2 hours to get there. Rang Ride, and owner Garry arranged to come out with a trailer and pick my little yellow friend up, which he did in about 10 minutes. In the meantime, my wife came to get me, as I was showing signs of hypo-very cold. I'm off shortly to se what needs to be done to resurrect things- I need my Ural!!!

Just had a thought (dangerous, I know!) A big bore kit is an option. Anyone know of any such animals?

I hope the problem is an easy fix. But rattles ending in failure are usually rather more complex.
Every now and then there is some discussion on SS but I think most, possibly all, end up running standard pistons. A search on SS should produce plenty to read. If you want more power, a guy here in SA increased rear wheel power by over 50% just by installing Modtop air intake and exhaust systems, and rejetting the carbs to suit.

Thanks Norm. Btw- 50% of not much, is not much more!

Spoke to the mechanic today, and had a look inside the case. Good news- the tappet covers are OK Unfortunately, not much else is. Metal pieces in the sump- looks like bits of bearings- right side big end solid, pistons RS from hitting the heads when the bearings- big end and crankshaft- let go. Probably go for a new engine, waiting for Jon T to put together prices. Wouldn't you know- only 3- 4 months out of warranty!

Interesting comment- a week before, I changed to Penrite semi-synthetic at the 25,000km service! Good news- the new engine will be in Tamworth tomorrow- Jon's bringing it down. Should be back on the road mid next week. In the meantime, I am riding Vic's red one, just to charge the battery. He has been ill, and unable to ride- doctor's orders! He'll be right for the Ural do in a couple of weeks, regardless.

Well- back on the road. Went for a ride today, in company with a good friend who has just re-assembled his Royal Enfield, with a 535cc piston. What a great experience- the Ural and RE cruising around the back roads in style! (Lots and lots of style!)

Went to Scone today- new engine has 550kms and running well. Unfortunately, a friend with us had the drive belt on his Kawasaki VN2000 let go, and at $1000 for a new belt, that is bad enough, but there is oil coming out of a hole in the crankcase. At least, lunch at "The Crowded House" restaurant in Scone was a good meal and a good deal.
