I'm in the midst of that enjoyable process of running in my new bike. Warrnambool is often called "windy" Warrnambool & I'm using calm days to give the bike an easy start to life. I tried fitting a small Givi windscreen, which looks nice in the photo section of IMZ-Australia. I took the screen off after just one short ride - it was so, so NOISY. I've had small screens on bike before and found them to help by keeping pressure off my chest etc, but never had a whistling, shrieking, tearing effect. I'm wondering if the tape around the edge of the screen causes the noise? Robert.

HI robert i have ridden with many people over long distances at high speed with Givi screens.I always quiz them on the screens as i would like to get one,out of six or more riders the feed back is always good. try removing the tape or angle.Dave

Thanks Davros, I'll try removing the edge band, then perhaps trimming the top. I'm wondering if the noise is because of interaction between sidecar screen and drivers screen. I need to try driving with passenger screen down. Robert.

Hi Robert. Over many years (48 years) of riding, I have had experiences with all shapes and sizes of screens and fairings. My Ural had the small Givi screen on, and whilst I did not have the noise problem you mention, I did find it no big enough to really do much for me. I fitted a National Cycle F15T screen some 12 months ago and find it to be great. It looks good, and works really well. Also, it only cost about $150 delivered to my home. I have used a number of this brand of screen on many bikes over the years, and find them to effective and strong. Two very important things to experiment with- angle and height- a small movement in either direction can make a big difference. If you are on the ride this weekend, say hello.

I really like the factory Ural screen. I left it home on our recent trip to Port Lincoln, did around 500km without the screen, didn't like the buffeting, especially on the days with strong north winds and helmet noise got a bit much. On my old BM the electric adjustable screen was fantastic, big screen on the Classic Harley was good except it was a bit too good on hot days.

On the other hand, I've tried the factory screen and could not put up with the buffeting. I ride quite a bit all year long without a screen. I've also ridden Urals with the Givi screen and thought them OK, nearly as good as no screen. See if you can get a ride on other Urals and see what suits you best. (there'll be a good variety at VARSTy next March, and maybe a few at Condah in November)

G'day again Robert, I tried a small givi type screen also and it was OK but still too much buffeting for my liking. Agree ith papasmurf regarding height and angle but being a taller rider this has always been an issue for me on every bike Ive owned. The quietest Ive ever ridden was a friends Yamaha TDM 850 and i think the reason was that the screen on these is quite a long way forward. Trial and error i suppose but I took mine off and am happy riding without it especially seeing as i live in a quite warm climate up here. I have a vario screen on my Honda XLV1000 Varadero which is excellent as you can adjust the height. Not sure what models they make them for.

I don't reckon my Ural goes fast enough to need a screen.
