I leave Tamworth Wednesday next week for a trip to Neerim in Vic. for the CMA National Run. The new engine has started to loosen up well, so should be ok. The point I want to make is this: I will be starting off with 3 new tyres- a Duro Road tyre on the 3rd wheel, and Avon Safetymileage on the drive and steer wheels. These are a little dearer than the Duros, etc, and I am keen to see how they wear. I'll let you know, as time goes by. If anyone has used the Avons, I'd like to hear your views.

I've had the Avon SM - they are the best road tyre out there I reckon, but the price is a bitch. Expect maybe 10,000km from the pusher...

That's about 3 times what I get from the Duros. Cost was $174 fitted- I took the wheel in to the shop and they charged $12 fitting, tyre $162. Not too bad. Btw, I get looked after at Ride Motorcycles in Tamworth- I've been dealing there for something like 45 years!

I have 3,000 on Tweety now, with heaps left on the rear Duro. I am expecting about 6,500. To date I have only done about 1,000 loaded and 1,500 in the Adelaide hills, so lots of powering around tight corners! Wear is definitely related to usage. Set up also plays a huge role. My R 80 BMW was not well set up and 4,000 from an Avon SM was good. My XS 1100 with 1.5 HRD chair was perfectly set up. With more weight, way more power!, and same usage I would get 7,000 out of Avon AM21 solo tyres. Food for thought. Cheers Michael

I fitted Avon SMs to front and rear, and a Duro to the 3rd wheel, as I said I would. They certainly have good grip, compared to the Duros. Leaving Tamworth at 0700 tomorrow, and going through Wellington to Cowra tomorrow (just over 500kms). Will test them out over the next 8 days!

Last night on the road- at Penrith, Putty Road tomorrow. I am very impressed with the Avons. Torrential rain last couple of days, and no sign of slipping! Only problem with the bike- clutch actuator lever not fitted correctly when new engine installed, so will have to take it back to the mechanic. May be an easy fix, but still able to travel nearly 3000kms in 6 days with no other problems.
