In the process of tracking down a weird "lumpiness" that my rig seems to have when it is cold I started by removing the rear, FD and checking the spline phasing - last time I put it back together it looked alright but I hadn't actually taken it out and marked it in the best orientation. With the swing arm and FD removed I noticed the leak from the drive shaft seal and will deal with that later. Phased the shaft and marked it. Took all the tires in for a balance and spoke check and everything seems ok. But the interesting thing was the Donut. This is about 3,000k's old. The bush is working its way towards the engine and has been stopped by the Flex Drive Coupling. Sent a picture to Clare who consulted with the US and no one has seen this before. They don't believe it can be achieved by incorrect fitting so Clare is sending me a new one (which is nice as I didn't ask for it). Anyone seen this before? When I replaced the old one (which is back in now) the smaller circumference on the ring was towards the gear box. Does it matter? Most of the pictures I have seen have it orientated that way.

Small diameter forward is correct. The bush moving is nothing new.........

Nearly 9000km on this Donut pictured, does the elongation of the driveshaft holes mean it's ready to be replaced? Is the length of the driveshaft I set it to correct? You can see there is virtually no gap between one side and the donut (the spec is 1-6mm I believe). Wilmo

Looks like way too much gap to me. I push the shaft into the donut by hand while the prongs are horizontal and get about 25-30k before replacement. Yours is due now...😳

You can see there is virtually no gap between one side and the donut (the spec is 1-6mm I believe). Wilmo The donut definitely needs replacing it is badly worn. Unusual for a donut to be so worn after 9000kms. In pic 3 the gap at the top of the drive shaft looks excessive? There are 3 positions for the drive shaft spline circlip to go with the centre one being the standard position. At no stage during a 360 degree rotation should any part of the drive shaft touch the donut excessively or even touch it for that matter. A few things to check if you are getting excessive donut wear. The first one I just stated re the driveshaft pushing up against the donut. 2: Check the universal for excessive play 3: Check the Final Drive drive drive shaft for excessive play. 4: Check that all the engine mounts are tightened including the one at the top (I’ve had one crack on me) 5: check that the drive shaft is not bent and is running true and finally ensure the swing arm bushes are in good shape. That’s my take on it Wilmo! maybe someone else can come up with further suggestions. What would concern me though is what I think is an excessive gap between the drive shaft and the donut as in Pic three. Cheers Wheels😎

Mine looks the same after nearly 14,000 k. ( bush backed out) If you have the shaft out. (remove swing arm to do so) then check the prongs on the end of driveshaft. I had one in which the prongs were off center. Not much but visible to the naked eye. This meant that the drive shaft did not rotate around the center line of the gearbox shaft but wobbled around it. ( ellipse???). This meant also that the FD end was whipping around out of line as well. This has done nasty things to the FD. I blame the backed out center on this ( out of round?? ) issue. Maybe it isn't but just thought would note my problem. This plus a swing arm issue was a hard one to find but I think we have it sorted. Time and kilometers will tell. Many thanks to Clare and Matt and Ural. They are amazing.

The bush doesn't seem to be backed out on this one, the angle of the driveshaft looks a little off to me as well, but that is the natural position of the driveshaft to the rear hub (one click of preload on the rear shocks). I've checked the phase and its correct. Bike rides smooth, no weird vibrations. The final drive is still 100% (had it apart not long ago to replace a cracked cover) so I don't think its rotating in an elipse as oldmate suggested. Will disassemble and check everything and replace the donut and see if the fast wear persists. Thanks for the tips everyone.

All sorted!!....hope you did the Final Drive Mod after replacing the cracked case?....if not! get ready for another cracked one, because all it takes is a gnarly ride or two!....It took three covers on two different Urals before I learnt my lesson!!😎
