After changing the final drive oil recently I found I had a problem with oil weeping out around the drain plug. A bit of a mystery because it never leaked before. Tried fitting a new copper sealing ring (annealed), no good. Tried an O-ring, no good. Tried tightening it up a bit more, no good. Couldn't just leave it because there's only 110ml of oil in there which doesn't leave any spare to waste. In the end I got on the lathe and made myself a better one which covers the whole face of the drain plug area not just a narrow little band like the OEM plug. Also, I gave it a 19mm AF hex to make it the same as the dipstick filler cap on top (it was 17mm AF). So no more having to get two different size spanners when doing an oil change. Made the hex longer as well, the original is too short and was getting a bit mashed up. All good now totally oil tight. Std ยฝ" fibre washer, cheap as chips and completely oil tight, and a neodymium magnet held in with Loctite retaining compound is heaps stronger than the original.

A brilliant fix Bruce , having the lathe & knowing how to use it sure is a big advantage. Have you tried "Dowdy Bonded Washers" ? I had a fuel leak in a pump pick up point on the bottom of a IMS 30lt plastic tank , it wept from day one, tried everything I knew to seal it but no luck until I found the Dowdy washers,Fixed.๐

My two old British bikes have dowty washers fitted under their fuel taps as std. and work very well but the problem I found with the stock Ural drain plug was the narrow width of the sealing face. It tends to push the any washer/O-ring into the hole and not press it against the housing face. What we have is a 17mm hex with a 16.5mm dia. sealing face under the head but a nice big 22mm sealing face on the final drive housing mostly going to waste. So what I did was use all that extra area. Now with my larger plug I could use a dowty washer and it would be very effective but the old fibre jobs are cheaper.

Good info ,thanks Bruce ๐ The Dowdy Washers are difficult to find in my area , auto / bolt / hardware shops know what the are but either don't stock them or only sell a box of assorted sizes for big $$. I tracked them down on line at Raceworks, 12 Station Rd. Riverview Qld 4303 sales@ddiauto.au
