Jack,
Forgot to add that you can turn right north of the Towers at Hervey Range Rd. which takes you to Townsville (100k) if you decide you don't like the route
Cheers

Days 10-14. Left Charters Towers after having a look around the town, nice place. After advice from Deano, I decided to go up the Gregory development road through Greenvale to the Lynd Junction, nice riding but there's not much at the junction except a roadhouse. Refuelled on 91 and headed back to the junction (a 3 way intersection) where two vehicles towing boats had collided with a 4 wheel nissan patrol. Stopped to render assistance, all ok and the police and tow trucks were duly called as they had no mobile coverage. Spent a couple of minutes trying to figure out how 3 vehicles could collide at a 3 way junction and didn't find an answer, puzzles me still!! On to Mt Garnet for an overnight and passed the point where I got towed back last year. An easy day to Atherton through some very pleasant country which reminded me of the home turf around Sth NSW Kangaroo Valley way. Stayed at Atherton cvan park where the owner remembered me from the tow back the previous year, nice bloke eve if he is a kiwi . Last day through Mareeba, lunch at a great Vietnamese pho shop in Kuranda and down the mountain to Cairns. About 3200km travelled, through a varied landscape and met some great folk. Succumbed to the common cold 2 days after arriving, however being from NSW the border pass required me to get Covey tested, me and Jack got tested at the Cairns drive through, and I think I might have the Australian record for being the only bloke to get Covey tested while sitting on a Ural. Jack and the Ural definitely brightened the medical staff's day. Completed the 35,000 service in my son's garage and after a couple of weeks with the grand kids and will turn south probably early September.

Ok, after a fortnight in Cairns teaching the grand kids bad habits and starting their sidecar apprenticeship, I hit the road down to Townsville for some planned maintenance at Bruce's TSV sidecar workshop. On the way up near Charters Towers I had noticed that the 1 spare tyre I had strapped to the nose was not going to magically multiply; so I rang around and Bruce had the duro 308s that i needed, I asked to set aside 3 and would meet up on the trip south. Some fairly busy riding from Cairns to Townsville down the A1 with a lot of trucks/backpackers in a hurry . Passed through Tully which didn't disappoint in it's claim to be the wettest place in Oz. Saw the big gumbie and rolled on down to Townsville. T'ville is a large city that I have normally passed and not stayed in. Found a c'van park on the south side and set up camp. Next morning up early and over to Bruce's for some spanner fun, got all 3 wheels off and over for change out. Took a couple of hours for the tyre guy to process to my turn in the queue, so had a good chat to Bruce who has been building sidecars for many years now. He had a number of outfits in production but had set aside the day to get me on my way again. Tyres returned and refitted, I had noticed the sight wear on the left hand side of the front and sidecar wheels. After checking on the alignment jig there was actually no toe in (should be 12mm) under Bruce's instructions I duly adjusted the toe in and lean out to specification. Interestingly the rig had tracked straight and I didn't have to wrestle the steering..... My outfit was set up by the guys at Gasoline and because it tracked straight I hadn't bothered to check it before. Lastly I took advantage of Bruce's expertise to sync the EFI throttle bodies as he had the gear and maps. They were very close but idle was too low, Low idle was probably my fault as I had bored out the exhaust baffles to release some extra horses but hadn't the tools or access to any to check out the affect on the EFI. Anyway, reset the idle and sync'ed the bodies up and down the rev range. If you're ever up FNQ and need some ural loving, give Bruce a call, he's in Aitkenvale - suburb Townsville, good bloke and some really good ural and sidecar knowledge that he will freely give out. Next I contacted Deano who came over to Bruce's, after he showed me over his new 2020 cT (geez it looks like a ranger) we went for a coffee and chat. Great to meet you Deano and I'll catch up when I pass your way again. Next morning set off for Bowen into a persistent headwind with the same old backpackers and trucks. Into Bowen and had a rest day the next day due to sore back from the spanner banging over the previous days. Have charted a course off the A1 to Nebo and south to Goomeri, so will see how that goes, Should be far more enjoyable than the A1 I reckon
