Hi all I’m Keith , been riding for about 15 years took it up at 40. I usually love exploring/adventure riding and camping etc on my XT660z I want to get a Ural for lots of reasons. I can’t get hold of a 2wd model unless I order one and wait , which is a real bummer.
So as an explorer , I look at a track and say “ that looks interesting , I wonder where it goes , I end up making wrong turns , U turns , getting lost etc. This is what I love to do and it takes me to places I’d never see.
So some questions.
So how are the left hand 2wd models going?
Do you guys get stuck often on a 1wd model? Someone mentioned a winch to me , I don’t think I’ll get that serious , if reverse and a shovel can’t help ?
I would want the higher Gpr? Exhaust. Is the low pipes a risk crossing a creek? ( I’m not silly , I don’t cross raging creeks but you do run into puddles are fire trails and dirt roads , I’ve seen some videos of people drowning them , the low exhaust worries if you reverse into mud , rocks etc)
My wife has promised to come with me , so the screen and other comforts for her are a must. ( she also asked if there was a seatbelt , haha)
Thanks for any advice and hello !

Hi Keith, yes there is quite a wait for the 2wd with the first batch having just arrived a week or so ago. I have not ridden mine much yet but the 21 is a far different machine to my 08. 2wd vs 1wd ? I have purchased 2wd because I could. In 100000+ k’s all over Oz With 1wd I have only ever had a push twice. Could I have got going without a push.....probably. Reverse is your friend and saviour in sand.......amazing escapes possible. Low pipes are not friendly anywhere your rear wheel can sink in sand, mud or wheel ruts. Not good on rocky creek crossings either. Saying that, many many owners survive with standard low pipes. You could bolt a seat belt in........never seen one used in Oz. Will your wife love it.........YES. Do we have great adventures......YES. Some of the girls..........and Jon to keep them under control. 🤣🤣 Just completed Tassie adventure. ( Five day Rip ) plus another five days adventuring. 🤣

Thanks guys.
Does a 1wd with the GPR exhaust have more ground clearance than the 2wd models?

Dunno about your last question about ground clearance but here is my 2wd two cents worth. We are sticking with 1wd. We have done a lot of off road in 4wd vehicles and have noticed that more "get out of trouble gizmos" just means you get stuck further in. Yes we have been stuck twice and both due to the low mufflers. We work on the "do we really have to go there" saying and we have been to a lot of special places on 1WD. This and the added complexity means us staying with 1wd ( for the moment). I have been known to change my mind. Welcome to this mob. There is many long term and long distance owners here with great info. Whichever way you decide to go you wont regret it.

I’ll lean in your experience. Here is an example question I’d ask of the bike or Ural. I head down an average dirt road , it’s hilly , it looks like rain. I’m heading back up to get out , it’s not that rutted or anything , but now wet clay. Eg I’m in Barrington tops or combining out of Yerranderie etc. Assuming I get out carefully on my fully loaded ADV bike with 2 days food , camping gear cooking gear etc No way on a road bike with road tyres , no traction , you end up covered in clay , well I would anyway A 1wd Ural gets out?

Have taken my 2020 1wd into many "4WD only" tracks, at times finding it very wet slippery clay and have so far managed to get out, at times passenger has been shifted to become pillion for added traction and a bit of a push but all part of the adventure. Cheers Pokey.

Keith,
On the subject of screens I find the one on my cT buffets my helmet. Only been in the chair once when my son rode it. Unclipped it and laid it in my lap and it was much better. My brother as passenger mentioned the same. Can't speak about the taller screen of the Ranger but others here probably can. If I was passenger all the time I'd take it off, but my wife finds it o.k. However it's down to individual preference and helmets. Also not much protection from rain which runs down the outside of the screen into your lap.
Cheers

Barrington Tops......pouring rain.....no problems 1wd. Walkers Crossing Innaminka to Birdsvill.......sand....no problem. May have been the road to Nundle....30 creek crossings...1wd....no problems.
You don’t NEED a 2wd but it is ok to WANT one. 🤣🤣

Keith. Our Ural is a 2018 Ranger. First registered Mar 2019 so now just over two years old and 18,000k. Regards your road question. My idea is that momentum is your friend in poor traction conditions. Have a look at the hill and hit it with momentum at the bottom and don't stop. Remember you cannot actually fall off like a solo. hang on, keep it straight and enjoy. I love mud and just graded gravel. Sliding is great fun. Oh and tall screen on chair and Givi screen on bike. Bike screen does buffet a bit but by the looks of the bugs it catches it is keeping some off me. Don't know about chair screen never been in it. Co-pilot likes it and that means nothing more needs to be said. In fact both screens were her idea. That and the color. This was the trade off for me getting another bike. A small price to pay. Did you say where you are at? Oldmate
