Anyone know if the “Billy Goat Bluff Trail” (near Dargo) is maybe doable on a Ural both 1WD and 2WD. It looks a daunting ride, but what a challenge. Going up looks a tough ask on a 1WD but coming down maybe the way to do it. Look forward to comments from anyone that’s been on it. Cheers Wheels. 😎

Would not even contemplate doing this on a Ural, the problem with this track is 2/3rds up is shale and steep. I think risk of roll over on Ural would be high. On a lite trail bike ok, have mates who did this on 1290 kato with a lot of damage. Been up and down many times in past with my 4WD and yes its ok but would have to say its at your peril on an outfit.
Can recommend many other challenging tracks or interesting tracks

Thanks for your reply Jake. Good advice! it has been well and truely taken on board. I’ve seen a few clips of the trail, it certainly is impressive and daunting. Attempting it may be a bit like “Jacobs Ladder” in Tassie and “Condomine gorge river crossings” in Qld (both of which Bobsie and I’ve done on our Ural/Ural’s)....”It’s because it’s there” Cheers Wheels. 😎 ps...Jake! coming down it, are there any steep climbing sections involved, or is it basically all downhill albeit steep, and do you think (coming down) the shale would be a problem in that if you started sliding you wouldn’t be able to stop?

No one says you have to ride it, but it can be looked at. It looks like it’s one of those rides though that once your committed that’s it. My ex Army training always used to put a lot of emphasis on always ensuring you can implement a tactical withdrawal when things go wrong, which I occasionally forget! Talking about Mount Ive, that top engine mount that snapped and I re-welded finally let go again. Had to get a new Mount off Clare. 😎

G’day,
Their are a couple of problems with Billy Goat, if a vehicle coming up you may need to pull over, if its the shale area you could end up with a roll over, to me that is probably the greatest risk, some sections are quite steep but good surface subject to traffic. The shale area is probably your high risk area.
You referenced Jacobs Ladder, did this and many tracks in Tassy on my GSA, thats a walk in the park.
You could certainly get up to the Pinnacles and the start of Billy Goat.
Here is a suggestion of a good ride wth some technical stuff but Awesome scenery.
Sheeyard Flat To Refrigerator Gap Refrigerator Gap to Bluff Hut and onto Lovicks Hut Lovicks Hut to King Billy Track King Billy to Howitt Road and Snowy Plains Snowy Plains to Kelly Hut Kelly Hut to Arbuckle Junction Arbuckle Junction to Pinncles Back to Moroka Hut Moroka Hut to Moroka Track out to Valacia creek and Briagolong for Fuel
Fantastic scenery and good camping. You can also cone back from Arbuckle to Licola if needed.
Have done all this on my GSA, to give you an idea Bluff Hut to Lovicks had a small stair case, (two crashes) King Billy had a get off at a hair pin, bitt rocky.
Their is also an alternate to Sheep Yard you could come up MT Stirling, Craigs Hut then down Bindarree Tack and up to Bluff Hut.
Their are so many ways to go up here. Even from Dargo, Lower Dargo Rd to Tabberraba, Richies Road etc.
Wow just thinking about these and I just want to pack and go.
Can ring me anny time in regards to High Country,
I am familiar with many high country areas, including to NSW boarder like Corryong. Their is a tremendous amount to exploring.
Can always ring me, I can help with mapping a trip

Jake, That's great information for planning a ride in the Dargo area. I haven't ridden that area, so looking forward to doing that some time. Are any of the old huts still there or have they been lost in wildfires?
I agree with you on Jacobs Ladder. Got up there easily in a two wheel drive car one day. It was really cold with wind and snow up the top. Cheers, Longtravel

The huts mentioned are still there. Plus a few others in the area, Howitts Hut is one and some that are walk ins.

Doing Jacobs Ladder on a 1WD Ural....just don’t run out of revs and quit on any of those hairpin bends on the way up on the steeper sections. If you do! your going to have a whole bunch of grief getting that Ural going where you want it to go. Cars, 2 wheels all good!...a 1WD Ural has a mind of it’s own when trying to get it going up a steep hill with gravel. Not tidy when there’s no room to move as well!...ask Lee sometime! 😎
