I have a 2015 CT and was talking to another ural owner who has a 2011 carb model when the question came up, Which is the better fuel to use? Regular unleaded, 95 or 98 ?
Cheers Muddy

Simple answer. Ural compression ratio is 8.6:1 Regular unleaded is just fine. Higher octane not required to control pinging until over 9:1. However, both 95 and 98 are cleaner fuels. Regular does leave a residue in the tank that builds up around the filter screen if the bike is not used regularly. Regular also “goes off” in a few months.
See, told you it was simple.

Muddy, I run my 2015 on 95 or 98 depending on the price per liter. If I can get a tank of 98 for 30 cents more per fill I will splash out and spend madly:) I keep a fuel log and get more kilometers out of a tank of 98 than I do out of 95. Having said that there seems to be no noticeable difference in the way it runs on either.
I get considerably less kilometers out of anything under 95, including ethanol blends, and the difference is noticeable: hesitant throttle, popping and farting and not as smooth.

95 or 98 for me deping on price as well. No noticable difference in either. Cant get 91 without ethanol around here and wont use it.

When I'm near civilisation I run 95 in my 2015. I certainly wouldn't waste my money on 98.
I have run plain (non-ethanol) 91 on a few occasions without any problems (with the Ural's 8.6:1 compression ratio it would probably run on kerosene).
On my outback runs, in some of the more remote places all I can get is opal and have had no problems with that either.
I've never run E10 in it and wouldn't. According to the owner's book it's not recommended.
In regards performance or fuel consumption I've not noticed any difference regardless of fuel used.
As an aside - one of my other bikes is a 1972 Norton Commando with 10:1 compression and the original owner's book recommends 100 octane. I always fill it up with 98 but I've found 95 doesn't upset it any (no pinging) so I'm not sure about all this octane business anymore. Some say the ratings now are different to the bad old days.

The Octane ratings are still the same Bruce but they differ between Europe / Australia / USA
Maybe I got a bad tank of Opal. The day was very hot but bike was doing fine till I got the Opal.......lost power, ran rough, pinged its head off and overheated badly. Was never game to use it again.

I'm planning a 7K km red dirt trip in August this year on my 2022 GU, OPAL fuel will be the only option on some sections. Previously I've used octane booster when regular petrol was the only option with satifactory results. Any thoughts on OPAL plus octane booster or is there another solution?

If I were doing 7000k of Red dirt on a my 2022. I would be carrying enough 98 RON fuel for 400 to 500km. In addition I would be carrying fuel octane booster for use with 95 RON. Furthermore, I will be researching the route for fuel availability by type. But thats just me. Are you doing the Canning stock route??

I can carry enough fuel (and loads of other crap) in the chair for around a 600km range. In the remote areas I plan to transit there is no 95 RON, only OPAL and that's the issue Lee mentions in this post. BP (the manufacturer) says OPAL is a direct substitute for regular unleaded 91, delivering comparable performance. If the engine can run on regular unleaded 91 that's great, an engine with a 10.5:1 compression ratio can't. Perhaps retarding the ignition to protect the pistons and valves might help, performance would be reduced but I have time and it's not a race. Anyone have any thoughts? Back in the day when I still rode solo, I had the dealer perform a factory reset on my GS's to allow the engine to run on unleaded 91 and OPAL. Never noticed any difference in performance or consumption, but back then I was still old! I guess Ural wouldn't have any experience with OPAL. No, not the CSR, Desert Raid 2023 to Jupiter Well in the Gibson Desert North, but planning the long way out and back. Still lots of this country I have to see.
