I am sure I am not the only one that has issues trying to kick the 2020 Ural over, frustrating. Decided to remove kick start which was not difficult and brought a jump start kit. What have others done.😊

A useless kicker on a carb bike could maybe be a worry ? Thinking of twisting the crank with a cylinder full of petrol.

Yep,has been a useless, unnecessary item on the L/H (Aussie) bikes for years. Haven't tried since I got the new crank in, but I never had a problem kicking mine over. Chrisdips (RIP) even had a video of me starting it somewhere out the back of Scenic Rim. He took the video because he didn't believe me when I said I could. The trick is to find the compression stroke and keep your hand completely off the throttle. The reason I even bothered was the starter went into that endless loop of working first time every time at home but failed on every ride. Fixed that with the new short black starter and haven't had a problem since. What I have noticed is that when Graeme reinstalled the lever it seems to be a notch, or two, further out than it used to be which means less travel so I need to fix that. When I have it off I will reduce the size of the metal horn they use as a strike plate to give it that extra bit of swing. Also use it to move the flywheel looking for TDC

Andy nailed it!....I use my kick starter regularly. It’s a dark art, but with constant practice one can master it. 😎

Isn’t it wonderful that we are all so different in the way we do things. I have not used a kickstart since the SR500 days. (80’s)……..I don’t have a wind up watch either 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Andy, how the heck do you watch the flywheel while you use the kick lever.? I find it hard enough getting down to look in the hole……👀

Have thought about removing kick starter also. Last time I used one was on a solo Ural many years ago. No electric starter at all. Have tried to kick our Ranger but got all caught up in sidecar attachments. Probably if it was the only option it might work. The kick start is an evolutionary leftover, like our appendix. There is no need to have one. The only reason it is still on ours is turning over doing the tappets. No, not true, it is laziness in removing it. yes that is the reason. Stay well all.

I have never used the kicker when adjusting the valve clearance and the efi bikes don’t have adjustable timing either.

...Andy, how the heck do you watch the flywheel while you use the kick lever.? I find it hard enough getting down to look in the hole……👀 Squat next to the bike and reach over. Guessing I am a bit more flexible than you? and have the advantage of youth? Probably helps that when I had the engine out I marked TDC in black and the wide notch that spins up before it in white. Sure, I could use the back wheel to turn the engine or even a flat bladed screwdriver to turn the flywheel, but choose not too. ...The kick start is an evolutionary leftover, like our appendix. There is no need to have one. Totally agree, if your battery is dead then a kickstart won't work on an EFI bike, but if I removed everything that might only be useful once I would have to strip it down to a bare bike, no spare, no fuel etc...

Main reason I have removed the Kicker in the past is that I am a Toes down shifter for both up and down shifts…….my 21 bike seems to have more room for some reason. Haven’t worked out why yet.
🤣 Andy, at 6’3” if I squat down I am still looking over the seat…..👀🤣🤣🤣
