Hi all,
My 2015 Ranger has had a very slight leak from the clutch slider O-ring. So slight that there's nothing on the ground, just a bit of a smudginess around the slider. However, just in the past couple of weeks I've noticed a very slight rattling noise when I engage the clutch, no noise at all however when I release the clutch.
Any thoughts would be welcome!

How many Kilometers? Have you changed your helmet? I am not downplaying your concerns - quite the opposite, but my 15 has had a slight clutch rattle since birth - the sound changes over time, but last time the box was out the plates were ok and well within spec.
Removing the GB isn't a huge job and I think you could pull and replace the clutch in situ if concerned, but there is every chance you will be none the wiser. From memory you can change the slider O'Rings (2) without removing the box and check the thrust bearing while there, but it sounds more like plates rattling. The 6 plate securing screws can be seen if you pull the starter and rotate the flywheel, but if they were done at factory I doubt they have loosened as I had a difficult time removing mine as there was plenty of thread lock.

Hi Seany, We used to get a slight sound on our 1970's BMW's. It was the thrust bearing. From memory I used to replace them about every 70,000km and it was an easy job to fix without taking the gearbox out. I got more k's than that out of the clutch plates, as long as the clutch wasn't slipped. With the dry clutch if you slip the clutch you get a burnt toast smell. Once you get that its time to replace the clutch plates, so a good riding technique is to never slip the clutch. Good luck with fixing that.

AndyH & longtravel - it's just clocked 21,000kms. Wish me luck replacing the o-ring! Thanks for the replies!

Thought about this yesterday and wondered if the seepage is actually coming from the slider? Oil tends to migrate around the back of the box, I was convinced my kickstart seal was gone, but after replacement the oil traces are still there and seem to be coming from the speedo worm drive cover. The other thing to consider is spline wear internally on the plates, but that means box removal to check. Do you know another rider that lives close? Best way to make sure yours is not unique is to listen to others

There is currently a discussion on Soviet Steeds under Order of Greasy Wrench/2014 & Later Models/Noise when clutch is engaged. There is a comparison of noise from thrust bearing vs. noise from main bearings. Also a mention of clutch plate rattle. There is a suggestion of replacing clutch plates about every 30,000-40,000km. I am so careful with my clutch, I am hoping to get more k's than that. But maybe better to replace them and be sure.

Must be a 2015 thing, noticed mine has a sound like a marble in a glass jar being gently rolled around when the engine is cold and the clutch is pulled in. Goes away when warmed up. This is not the "jet engine scream" someone in Brisbane is experiencing (my guess plates/splines not main bearing).
Luckily the thrust washer is easy to get to so I will check that first - after my list of other stuff.

Noise when engaged probably stuffed splines. The spline can rattle a bit if the clutch plate is not completely free on disengagement….… Bad and excessive premature spline wear on some bikes. I have done 90k on a clutch…..still fine even though abused (smoked) at times.

Maybe they have improved the material on the clutch plates since my experience with burnt BM clutches in the 70's. Although the Ural clutch sill feels like a 70's clutch. The 90,000 plus out of a clutch sounds better then 30,000! There was a report on Soviet Steeds this morning of a guy who has 162,723km on his 2009 Ural without having had the motor apart. Now that is something to aim for.

So o-ring replacement went well. replacing the o-ring was easy.... getting to it was a bugger of a job. But got it done and now no leakage. the slight rattle noise when clutch disengaged (yes AndyH that's what I meant, sorry!) does indeed sound like a marble in a glass jar. Not very loud. Interestingly, since I started doing my own maintenance on the Ural and learning as I go, I now tend to hear soooo many more noises! I think it's just being more aware and paranoid now!
