During my recent efforts to perform a rear wheel exchange (which is a whole other story) the rear axle came out looking like this, again. First time was it was showing the same signs. I put it down to being new and in storage. The axle had a light linishing to remove the marks, prior to refitting. The location of the marking suggests it cause is in the wheel hub area. The seals are not showing any signs of wear in the rear hub and bearings feel OK. I left the axle as is, this time and refitted it into the spare wheel hub which is the new pusher with new tyre. The original rear will now become the spare and is about 1/3 worn. I expect the next time it comes out, if the marking continues I will get it chucked up in a lathe and see if it is straight. Does anyone have a similar experience, or suggestions as to what may be going on??

Let me guess. Eccentric fitup and poor alignment of bearing journals. With the mating face of the end plate. Ie It aint straight when its bolted up.No wonder you had to pound it out. Thoughts on my little problem??

I do not have an answer as yet. Axle was straight. New axle in now and will have a look at 1k or so. 👀. Pic was at 12k on original. I have seen another just the same.

Can the faceplate which bolts up to the FD be clocked up with the other end between centre. That should reveal any runout in the shaft and along its length or perhaps centre the shaft and look at runout across the face??. I also noticed the seal on the FD end of the wheel hub to be a bit suspect. Had a second look and the spring behind the lip had dislodged..There were tiny bits of rubber in behind and near the circlip..I am thinking thats where crap is getting in causing water damage and dirt ingress. But that may only support the damage around and in the hub area. The FD section is another matter. Many thanks.

Checked my axle in a lathe….good and true. Seals fine and no water ingress.

I think yours is a 2021. Was the other one you know of, also a 2021??
Can that outboard seal be replaced without knocking the bearings out??

Yes 21. Which seal? Swingarm, brake carrier, wheel or FD ? Anyway, they can all be plucked out.
