My bike's power has been down this year, and oil use has increased, especially during the 4,000km Victorian ride in March this year. Being an optimist, (or a bit slack when it comes to maintenance), I decided the bike was fit for the Russian outback ride in June. The ride, including the ride to and from Kentucky, was 8,000km. Performance was still a bit down, but the bike still kept up the front bunch of riders. Oil use did increase, and on the last 1,500km became somewhat excessive. Once home I removed the heads, barrells and pistons. The left side looked pretty good. A hone of the barrell, new rings would have sufficed. The valves looked fine, the valve guides a bit loose. The right side was somewhat different: After costing the options I have ordered new barrells, pistons and complete heads from Jon. While the bike is in pieces I will replace the swing arm bearings, and instal a new final drive universal.

Oh dear... I had thought you'd go a while yet before this kind of work. All new bits (not recycled by Jon) going into it?

G'day Ross,
I looked at re-boring the barrels and buying oversize pistons. Jon informed me that Urals sell A, B and C matched barrel/piston sets, all of which use the same size rings. Re-boring and oversize isn't an option. SO...... new barrels and pistons.
The valve seats looked good, but closer inspection revealed valve guide and oil seal wear. I calculated the cost of buying new valves, valve guides and seal, and the labour to remove and insert the guides, reseat the new valves, bead blast the old heads etc, etc. It was only marginally most expensive to buy new complete heads. So.........complete new heads.
Maybe I don't need to buy a new bike. These are quite fun to work on, even for non-mechanics like me.
Steve sent the bits on Tuesday, so they should be here soon. Can't wait to on riding with all this extra new power!!

Heads and barrels; congrats, go straight to cert IV mechanic-ing. You showed very good judgement there Norm, but its just as well you didn't have another 1000ks to go.

Chris, I tried to post pic of the piston here, but I can't upload photos now from my iPhone to this forum. But I put a pic on SS and a pic of the crud blocking the fuel tank cross over tube.
Polished the exhaust system today and cleaned the carbs inside and out. Just have to instal tank, exhaust system and change oil and reattach sidecar, and I will have a nearly new bike!

Great work Norm! Did you have a good look at your fuel tank mounting lugs? Three of mine have tiny cracks shown up by a bit of muddy looking dampness. I've got to get cracking with my preparation for departure to KI via Birdsville, last week in August.
