If I may add some input, I grew up in Port Augusta and as a lad explored the areas West of P.A. across to the Gawler Ranges, Streaky Bay and down to Port lincoln . You will find the best times for this area is April, Port Lincoln usually is much cooler than inland Wudinna and the Gawler Ranges. The normal drive would take you through Port August then west to the Gawler Ranges . To save distance and time at a cost a ferry is now operational from Wallaroo [ 90mins north of Adelaide ] to Lucky Bay near Cowell North of Port Lincoln check out the web site , from Cowell the road goes up to Kimba or head west via Lock to Wudinna , for those coming down from the NT or Qld you can take the road North West of Woomera to Kingoonya a rail siding on the train line to WA , the road then heads South [ all dirt ] to the Gawler Ranges and meets the highway at Wirrulla about 1 hour West of Wudinna and 40 minutes from Streaky Bay. The costal areas from Ceduna to Port Lincoln are spectacular , mostly dirt roads into the beach or cliff areas. Anyone who has the time and wants to visit the Maralinga bomb site West of Ceduna should check out the vast details on the Maralinga Web site. We don't have any fishing licence in SA so bring along a fishing line as the West Coast has great fishing for those that like seafood . I probably have room in my front yard for at least 3 trailers for those that need storage for the Ural mothership.
I certainly will pull out all stops to attend this Rally , need more info ? let me know . Cheers
Rob

Thanks for the input Rob. I have an image of you with your hand up...........to organise the tour.... Checking April 2018 dates...... 4 - 14 fits between Easter and school hols. Need Caravan Park with cabins and camping at Gawler Ranges and somewhere South of there for about 5 nights each. Assuming there are enough roads and sights to spend 4 days touring at each location. This is just "throwing it out there" to you guYs and gals.

Sounds good Lee! GET ORGANISING MATE let us all know what the dates are….where we are going….. and where we are going to stay Re Cape York I am more than happy to organise it. I lived in Cairns for 10 years and commercially fished the reef from way south of Cairns to way north of Lizard Island. spent a lot of time in Cooktown and have a lot of great contacts right the way up to the top. Just throwing this one out there for comments, if anyone else wants to take it on then that is good also. From experience late August early September is probably the best time, no monsoons and very few howling SE trade winds. The year 2018…2019 Cheers Wheels

Piper (Rob) has this tour in hand. It is just great that Uralists step up for the benefit of the group. Details to come following some investigation. Thank's Rob.

2018 April 4 to 14 approximate dates I am waiting for some more details from Mt Ives Station, also the Seastar Ferry mob that operates a ferry from Lucky Bay near Cowell to Wallaroo a 2 hour trip that saves the long haul drive from Port Lincoln, Port Augusta and beyond, its an option !
As the plan comes together how does the Uralist Clan feel about a mix and match of locations: i.e. Suggestive idea only at this stage. Meet at Port Augusta/Stirling North 1 night Mt Ives Station 3 nights explore the Gawler Ranges Ellistion 2 nights , small town with fuel, bakery, pub and good caravan park, great ocean views and roads to explore. Port Lincoln 2 nights. Cowell 1 night , good pubs, bakery and craft shops for the ladies also within 20 minutes of the Ferry "lucky Bay to Wallaroo" Homeward trip, Wallaroo is 90 minutes from Adelaide , Port Lincoln is at best 6 hours.
Do we prefer longer stops? remembering the Eyre Peninsula has some big distances to cover . Feed back please, the good and the bad !
Cheers Rob

It is all good stuff Rob, however experience has taught us that a base works best as long as the area can support a number of days to tour out. eg. A two night stop only allows one day to tour the area. A ten day tour with three locations only alows for two days touring each area as three are spent transporting . It is ALL about what is available in each area that will interest the group.......that is, fun riding to attractions. If we can happily spend four days touring different areas of GR and four at PL then 5 and 5 works. 250 - 350km transport from GR to PL through Cocata NP and Elliston etc. .......no problem If three days at each is plenty, then two at Elliston may work.....4 - 2 - 4 One night stays are just a waste of time..... This is not all about my likes......anyone can throw their thoughts in......Rob can throw them away as he wishes ..ha ha ha Lee

Agree with Lee on the 5 and 5 at the Gawler Ranges and Port Lincoln. I am not familiar with the Gawler Ranges but the maps certainly show some interesting rides and places to see. Robyn and I have both spent a fair bit of time at Port Lincoln and Elliston when we did 11 months travelling around Australia. While Elliston is a small nice and scenic place it really only warrants an overnight stay but Port Lincoln is a different place altogether, plenty to see and do (e.g Tuna farming tours etc) a ride to Coffin bay a must, you can even go and cage dive with Great White Sharks Maybe a 5 at GR a 1 at Elliston and a 4 at PL would work also! Thats my 2 bobs worth hope it all helps with the planning we will go with the flow which ever way it goes... Cheers Wheels
