About three weeks ago I started to wash my bike. It's gets dirty because I keep finding new places to ride, and many of them are dirt. This area is great like that.
Anyhow, I started washing then decided I'd rotate tyres while at it. I pulled the sidecar wheel off then decided it needed a proper clean in behind it so the rotating got put off. I cleaned and checked and fiddled with stuff then the rain/cold came and I gave up.
So the bike has sat for three weeks without one wheel and yesterday I started again. Oven cleaner on the exhaust, cleaned the chair, pulled the spare and cleaned it. Fiddled some more.
Now for some reason I have the final drive on the bench 'cause I figured I may as well grease the splines and clean the drive teeth before putting another wheel in there.
I keep getting distracted. Tomorrow I'll try to get the bike clean, but maybe I'll pull the front wheel off just for a look?
I must be mad...

No, not mad. That drive spline needs to be greased every time the rear wheel comes off. Wore my first spline out in just under 20k. Have done 45k without wear on the replacement. Also added an o ring at the inner end of the spline....does wonders for keeping dust and water out and grease in.

I gather it dosn't cause any dramas with the final drive seal by pushing on it? Cheers. Paul.

Ok, you can all laugh now... I decided to put the new tyres on myself, something I've always avoided. I've gotten 3/4 through the first one and I'm stuck trying to get the valve back through the rim. I have one of those little puller thingys coming, so when that gets here I'll kick it's arse.
The Mitas H02 is very soft in the sidewall and is dead easy to take off. The tyre from China is a bit harder but two tyre irons got it half on no worries. The other half will be fine once I get the tube in place.

All you need is fingers to fit the tube and valve stem. The trick is to have the stem facing you.....

Paul.
The O ring is a #222 1/8 x 1-3/4 imperial ... Metric measured at 3.4 mm. And 44 mm OD. Fits perfectly in the groove at the inner end of the hub spline and does not touch the seal.

Thanks or that Lee, seems like a smart simple mod to me. I had a quick look last time I had the wheel off but was a bit concerned about the seal so didn't do anything. I'll pick a couple up next time I go past a bearing shop.

For the tyre change, put the tube in tyre with a bit of air in it before placing on rim.place valve in position then fit tyre. this also prevents you from pinching the tube.ps if you think the china tyres are hard try a brand new 20 year old russian tyre
