Recovery gear ,interesting topic,,,,multitude of options in the electrical arena , the storage and delivery of those little elections need regular upkeep , unfortunately I have seen so many that have neglected to keep the auxiliary battery healthy , just saying .
looking forward to seeing the photos , once the Urals go all electric we shall all probably be in a retirement village thinking those were the days !!!!!

The hand winch that I have used has worked well, I originally had this set up for my GSA, used a few times in anger with a mate that came off.
With the many trips we have done with our 4WD and camper I have had a few trips where winch would normally be required but my best piece of recovery is our Max Trax. Use these more than anything else.
My intention is to make a small one for the Ural. As usually we only need to move a metre or so to get sorted.
We will be back from our trip soon, I will do some photos of the hand winch set up and how I sort the steering to keep a straight line.

Hi All, Haitch, you wanted something to stop the bike going backwards. Plenty of yacht pulleys out there with jam cleat attached. Perfect for what you are looking for.

Hi oldmate.
Thanks, and whilst not ex navy, I am ex sailer.. So yes I had something like that in mind. I was just trying to raise this as a consideration for those going the manual winch route.
Hi Jake. Yes am a big fan of Maxtrax too. I understand there is already a short version available, for all terrain vehicles I think. Might be worth a google. I can see an application already for ramping over logs, rocks and gullies.

Ha!..good to know there’s a couple of ex Matelot’s own Urals and better still get on the Forum occasionally! Now I don’t have to pick on Lee as much!....As a young Army Soldier I played a fair bit of Footy in the inter service sports at HMAS Cerberus. We whipped the navy’s ass most of the time against all odds. Those odds were the strategic placement of their better looking WRENS around the field making concentration difficult, but that often backfired. Some of those beautiful girls were often swayed to look on us Army Lads in a different light, especially when we were winning, and all it took was the slightest encouragement from even one of them and we were into it. The Navy Lads mostly come out snarling and the ensuing blue was admirable and mostly uncontrollable. After these games everything was forgotten with a lot of back slapping, and some hard partying was always on the cards. Funny though, as the nights progressed one or two of those pretty Navy Girls would say to some of us Army Lads “Oh! by the way we are having a Um! late party at our quarters and we have prepared a way for you guys to sneak in”. Now that got our attention big time! but the venture was always fraught with danger because it was a big no no with Navy regulations. Get caught (no matter who you were) and you were in deep shit!...we never ever got caught and the party was always a cracker. Winning the Footy was always paramount!...but as young bucks! stealing their beautiful women was the icing on the cake. Oh! by the way, this was all before Bobsie’s time. 😎 ”Life is nothing but memories”

Lockdown makes you do strange things you wouldn’t normally do. Bought a Sherpa ATV winch and mounted to the s/car. Mounted the solenoid inside and installed a second battery which is connected to a DC to DC charger. Winch comes complete with handlebar control and remote control plus all necessary wiring. I had to make up some brackets for the mount, but at the moment I’ve got zoo much time and not much else to do. Now what other stuff can I do that I don’t need? ?
