Winch load tested.... vertical lift with me on board. 👍🤣 Hi Lee. You've lifted part of the machine off the ground, but the winch is not carrying the full weight of the machine and the line of load is not in the same direction as would be in the field (fore/aft). Looking at your attachment design, the fore/aft load case will place the highest stresses on the attachment joint. A winch pull may also require in excess of the machines weight if stuck in mud or caught on obstructions etc... If I were to load test my attachment I would anchor the machine to something solid (maybe a number of snatch straps looped around the rear of the sidecar frame and secured to the truck that parks on the other side of my street. Then attach the winch cable to another anchor (at the full cable extension - there the motor pull is greatest) and then attempt to stall out the winch... Or where the winch electronics max out the current supply. Just rambling thoughts. 🤪

JW, the pull on the winch is fore aft to a turning block. In pic the front wheel has maybe 10kg on it at most. With me on the bike AND bouncing, all wheels are clear and static load is over 400kg.....god knows what the load goes up to with me bouncing to see if there is any flex in the mount...😳 In a severe recovery position I would rig at 2 to 1 or more if necessary to reduce the winch load anyway.

Just about pulled my shed down trying out the winch this morning, guessing it was better to try it out here than waiting until shit happens out in the wilds somewhere! Nothing flew off, broke or blinded me, but Jesus wept that rope is tight on the winch now! This may interest some!...I don’t have a winch dedicated battery! and bar a few turns on the winch I pulled most all of the 10 metres of 5mm Dyneema off the winch and tied it to the shed. Hopped on the Ural, applied a lot of brake, and winched like buggery till the shed looked like it was coming onto the winch. Test done!...BUT! the engine wasn’t running during the whole winch and when I hit the starter she fired right on up and kept doing so. Being real cocky at this stage I stopped her, flicked on the ignition and kick started her!...big grin! Next test was doing it all over again, with the motor running, and the throttle lock keeping enough revs on to have the alternator charging (I have a digital volt meter). Well, all went good...the only difference was the winch run a little harder with the motor running. I guess the end result is that I can get at least one decent winch without a dedicated winch battery (and still be able to start up) if for some reason the engine has lost it, like out in the middle of a river crossing. Lee!...you nailed it with the winch positioning mate. Cheers Wheels. 😎

G’day Everyone,
Just wondering what brands of winches people are using and where you purchased from.

Finally got around to fitting a winch; Placed a small 150amphr battery in a plastic Pelican type case to run winch and also have ability to run Anderson plug from winch to bike battery if needed to charge up winch battery.

Nice work Jake. I guess you have a fairlead up front as well?? How did you mount it?
